Quote:Link. You have proven my point, and I thank you. His heel may have slid over his toe, may have grazed it, barley. Stepping on his foot??? Not at all! If his foot were stepped on then Robben's foot would have been planted on the ground longer then it was, which was, well, not at all.

Quote:You have proven my point, and I thank you. His heel may have slid over his toe, may have grazed it, barley. Stepping on his foot??? Not at all!Contact is contact. And contact warrants a penalty. BTW, I got that of the Reddit thread and I've yet to see a single person in there who thought it wasn't a penalty.
For me the Robben "trip" is a penalty. Whether the contact made was enough to actually force Robben to swandive to the turf with an expression of pain on his face is doubtful, but his run was impeded. Soft call but a penalty.
The flopping/diving in soccer is what's drove me away from the sport in recent years, although I've learnt that unless you go to ground, often you will not get legitimate calls that you should get. There is no advantage to staying on your feet when clipped so why not go to ground? Rolling around in faux pain to attempt to con the referee into producing a card for your opponent though... Quote:But we have video replays and coaches challenge should there is a questionable call. It doesn't eliminate all bad calls i.e the infamous Green Bay/Seattle MNF game, but it's better than nothing.Except that was the right call.
I'm not a fan of video replay in soccer, for two reasons.
1) The game doesn't have any natural breaks like football has between plays. When do you review the incidents? Do you stop the play immediately or wait until the next stoppage. How long after the incident will that be? 2) a lot of calls in soccer are subjective, similar to pass interference in football, and for that reason PI is not reviewable We show less advertisements to registered users. Never wavered on that or said anything else. My point was he was barely contacted, definitely not stepped on. My beef was always that Robben should be a world class athlete and play through such a soft foul. He went into it with the intent of diving rather than making a play. That is what irks me to no end.

That finish was awesome. behind the back. Goal Germany.

Quote:BTW, there's a nice little divide going on in the news. Fixed. Lebron is actually taking a pay cut so they can bring Carmelo or another elite player.

He won't admit he was wrong about the "stepping on the foot" thing. Instead, he tries to pretend you said it wasn't a penalty. DragonFury sure reminds me of another poster that frequents this board.
Why did that NED player act like he got shot in the back?
The soccer flop is the biggest joke in all of sports.
Not gonna lie, I don't like soccer much but for whatever reason I've been keeping track of the usmnt and even caught the last game. Plan on watching the one tomorrow.

DragonFury sure reminds me of another poster that frequents this board.I got one mixed up with the other, it happens. Especially since I wasn't sober when debating the first. And he did step on Robben's foot, though it isn't as bad a foul as that phrase might suggest, it still did happen. Looking around other news and opinion sites I'm far from the only one who thinks the contact was clear and the penalty was correct. We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:Because the SEVEN refs on the field in NFL games never get a call wrong. I think it's safe to assume that NFL refs are not quite as corrupt as FIFA refs. Not only that, but NFL refs each have a separate thing they are all looking at, and they at least have an instant replay system in place. The side judges are there to help to a point, but the head ref has way too much power to change a game entirely without a question being raised. Quote:I think it's safe to assume that NFL refs are not quite as corrupt as FIFA refs. Not only that, but NFL refs each have a separate thing they are all looking at, and they at least have an instant replay system in place.I wouldn't say referees at the World Cup are "corrupt", although there has been issues historically. The problem with world cup officials, is that they are from the 32 participating countries, so how can you expect an official from a small country with a part-time league to perform as well as officials from your big leagues in Europe? Imagine high-school referees in the NFL.. oh that happened.
Quote:I wouldn't say referees at the World Cup are "corrupt", although there has been issues historically. The history of FIFA refs and bribery is too much to ignore. From what I've seen the officials here have been pretty good, but there are little things they can do to change the game as well. I'm thinking in general, especially for penalty kick calls, red cards, and possibly to a point yellow cards should get a review. Someone asked what you would do because of the flow of the game....stop the game. I think everyone can agree that they would want the correct call to be made instead of an error changing the game. |
