Planning a trip to the US West Coast

#21

Quote:Look into the side of the Grand Canyon close to Vegas.  I know they have a glass bottomed thing you can walk out onto over the Canyon on an indian reserve.  From what I've heard its expensive and not worth it.

They'd have to pay me before I walk onto that thing.

Quote:Also; I can book my international flight easily with Dutch website but what's a decent site to book my flight from the West Coast to Jacksonville?

The prices I was pulling up were from Kayak.

Quote:OK, so new plan:

Saturday: Arrive in San Diego and see whatever the city has to offer.

Sunday: Gameday, drive to Santa Barbara straight after game.... Spend rest of day first with police, then making accommodations for crashed rental car...

Sunday: Gameday, drive to Santa Barbara straight after game, skip LA.

Monday: Sight seeing in Santa Barbara, drive to Big Sur (have to check what part I want to see before committing)

Tuesday: More of Big Sur. Drive to San Fran in the evening.

Wednesday: Sight seeing in San Fran.

Thursday: Fly to Vegas, spent evening gambling and drinking irresponsibly.

Friday: Grand Canyon day.

Saturday: Fly to Jacksonville.

Sunday: Gameday.

Monday: Die from sleep deprivation.

Quote:DF, I'd suggest going to the SD game, driving up highway 1 along the Central Coast to SF, fly to Vegas, see the Grand Canyon, fly out of Vegas to JAX.

SFO->LAS is about $63 and LAS->JAX is about $175. That also hits every city and route on your list. Bingo Bango Bongo.

THAT's great advice.  ^^^

I drove from LA to San Fran a couple of years ago, and to me, the highlights were, in order,

Santa Barbara (a really beautiful town, but should only take a couple of hours)

Cambria (one of those classic California rocky beaches, and hotels on the beach are cheap)

San Simeon (but you may want to skip this since it will take all day to see Hearst Castle)

And all the beautiful coastline.  There were lots of places to just park and look.

As for Big Sur, we sort of sailed through it.  Maybe I was too locked in on driving, but I really didn't see that much there.

Anyway, you have a great plan.  Enjoy it.

I would be exhausted personally after this itinerary but to each their own.  The drive from So Cal to No Cal is really, really long but hey if that's what you're game plan is more power to you.  If you can stay awake for the Jaguars game after all that, major props.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Not sure what everyone loves about Kayak. I only tried it once or twice, but my experience is that it just gave me a dozen popups of the other travel sites. A little secret: all of those sites draw their fares from ITA. ITA also happens to have a free public window. It is as follows: matrix.itasoftware.com/

There are a couple of catches to make it work though. First, you can't buy anything off of this site. It simply publishes fares. You need to take the information to a purchase site (I recommend the airline site directly). Second,  you have to learn what to do with it a bit, but once you get good with the site, you can travel for pennies on the dollar, simply by changing your flight by a day or driving to another airport an hour down the road.

Bottom line though: priceline, travelocity, orbitz, and all the others pull their fares from the site I listed. That's why all the fares always look the same. It's because they are.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Don't get me wrong, I've done this same thing. But you're taking a vacation from work and you're immediately confining yourself to a stringent itinerary. It kind of seems to defeat the purpose of a vacation.

You'll be exhausted halfway through. Good luck, and enjoy yourself.

I have family in Palm Springs. Would always recommend the Grand Canyon. I do a flight to Vegas, spend a night, go to the Grand Canyon for a day and then drive to South California. It's alot of driving but you see some great sites.

Also, the drive from LA to San Francisco is a heck of a drive. Bring some good books on tape.

No need for books on tape. Just get the hardbacks. I saw an infomercial for this suction thingy he can use and mount it on the windshield. It's totally safe because your hands free. Especially if your a slow reader like me. However, your your a really fast speed reader that's when it starts to get dangerous constantly taking your hand off the wheel to turn the page.
