It was also really great to see Bortles play well and look extremely comfortable in the pocket. That to me was huge. And he commanded the offense. For a guy who is supposedly a raw rookie and going to sit for the whole year Bortles looked pretty good. He's going to test the regime's patience when Henne is losing game after game this year. It's going to be tempting to throw him in there.

My quick takes from the scrimmage.


1. Bortles looked far more comfortable out there than Henne. I know it was against the second string, but he looked like the true pocket passer this team has been missing for a LONG time. Bortles also seemed more willing to throw it intermediate/deep, though he may be have had more opportunities, tough to tell from the feed. Both positives for Bortles though.


2. First team offensive line seemed to hold their own in the passing game, run game not so much. They weren't pancaking anyone, but for the most part they gave the Henne some time to throw. If there was a weak point in the pass blocking, it was from the interior. Tried to focus on Joeckel every so often and he did fine to me.


3. Hurns and Brown stood out on offense. Both were able to make some nice catches, but each did bobble an easy ball. Not a bad showing from a pair that should be be fourth and fifth options.


4. Batted balls. Defense line was able to get at least three of them in the scrimmage and Branch and Marks each had one. Hopefully it wasn't simply a case of playing against Chad and that can continue into the regular season.


5. Linebackers played well. LaRoy Reynolds had a pick negated by a penalty and Telvin Smith was flying around. Smith wasn't afraid to hit his opponent and as Shadrick/Sexton pointed out, that drew the ire of Bradley during what should have been minimal contact.

Where do you think the weak links were?

 

How did Joeckel look?  Do you think, based upon his performance in the scrimmage, that he can be counted upon to be the strength of the OL?

I didn't watch the OL specifically. It was just a general impression. The run game was frequently stuffed at the LOS and IIRC (and there was no replay) both of Henne's batted passes were batted behind the LOS. It seemed most of the penetration was against the right side of the OL. Alualu was getting into the backfield a lot against the 2nd team OL.


It takes the line a lot longer to gel, and there are three new starters (four if you count Joeckel). So maybe the problem will be solved by the start of the season. but it looks like the biggest problem is that the OL lacked strength.

Seems about right. Henne was a bunch of short passes and checkdowns and several into the hands of defenders.

 

Bortles was more aggressive with the ball.

I still say let Henne take the rough start of the season, give the line time to get their feet under them, and let him in 6-7.  Though I think he'll be in by 5, after Henne has an "injury".

It was tough for the rook at first because he hadn't been getting the snaps. It was similar with Gabbert because he wasn't announced the starter until after the final Preseason game. If there's any chance that Bortles might have to play before mid-season, then the earlier they make the move the better so he can get the starter reps.

Ok...thanks for correcting me as I didn't spend the time to look things up. The point was that both rooks didn't get much in the way of starters reps in training camp causing them to get thrown into action without adequate practice. Of course in Byron's case his lack of reps also had to do with him holding out for so long.

Blake's poise in the pocket is not the question with him. For him to display that on scrimmage should be expected of him. Its the mechanics that still needs work. He did outplay Henne yesterday (albeit 2v2 instead of against the 1s), which is a bad thing for us this season, as its quite possible that in spite of Blake's mechanics, that we might get tempted to put him in there if he continues to outplay Chad.

Thanks. Though I unfortunately did not see the scrimmage, I have long feared the OL would be a problem this year, especially early. You are usually good in your football takes, so if that is any indicia it may be tough sledding early on, even against the softer defenses.
