Bortles getting lots of love

My favorite quote from the article...

Quote:

The highlight of the night? Diagnosing a one-on-one matchup in the third quarter, Bortles pump faked to his right, scanned to his left and threw a 29-yard dart to Taylor. It was a thing of beauty and enough to get people wondering what it would take for him to get first-team reps.

If Manziel was having the preseason Bortles is having, @nflnetwork would have canceled the rest of our programming for the month.

My favorite quote from the article...

Yup. My favorite play. Gruden said it would be nice to see him take advantage of the one on one coverage outside. Changed the play and executed it to perfection.

Its only two preseason games so I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm. But Bortles looks like the real deal. He's got the juice.

My favorite quote from the article...

A dart is right! BB5 looked like he was just kinda flinging it. But that ball had no arc and zipped right above the shoulder of the corner back. It was one of the nicest throws I've seen!!!

My favorate throw he made was in the 2nd quarter on the bootleg. He threw it to I think Brown, and I was like, Oh man, well that guy is covered. But he rifled it in there!!! I made my 5 year old watch it with me 4 times! On the scramble and to be able to get it into that tight a window was very impressive!

It's just his second game, and it's only preseason, but man does Bortles look legit!

He has some serious zip on the ball, and his throwing motion is rather fast... I can see that... But Marino didn't have the scrambling ability that Bortles has... But I don't think Bortles has the pocket mobility Marino had... At least not yet. Marino could evade a sack but just hoping left/right/forward/back like none other.

I'd like to see the throw from the end zone to Bumphis again but can't find it. That was right there with the Taylor pass.

From USAtoady...

Quote:

Rookie report: Bortles played with and against second stringers but looked very impressive for the second straight week and seems rather capable of pushing for playing time when and if team brass allows it. He was accurate, again displayed the ability to throw on the run both to his left and right, looked off safeties, never panicked and seemed to have no trouble operating a no-huddle attack. He completed 11 of 17 throws for 160 yards but couldn’t get Jacksonville into the end zone. Fellow rookie Marqise Lee snared Henne’s TD toss. Things weren’t as good for Chicago. First-round CB Kyle Fuller left in the first quarter with an ankle injury. But RB Ka’Deem Carey scored a garbage-time TD for the Bears.

Bortles deserves every bit of praise he's getting. Some of the plays he made, or even plays that weren't successful where he was dropping passes into some pretty tight windows on the run were impressive.

Watching him check out of a play, change it at the line, drop into the shotgun, look right and drop a pass over coverage for a big gain last night was a great sign that good things are coming. They weren't letting Gabbert audible out of plays this early in the process.

I don't think anyone could accuse Marino of having pocket mobility. Awareness? Yes. The guy had a sixth sense and knew when to slide up in the pocket, but as far as mobility goes, I think the Jaguar statue in front of EverBank has about as much.

Bortles will develop the pocket presence with time. I think it's really encouraging that he's not a guy who is going to get happy feet when he senses pressure. I also believe he prefers throwing to running. They kept comparing him to Roethlisberger last night, and even showed a particular pass play where Ben rolled left and threw against the grain for a TD. It was identical to a play they showed of Bortles from UCF right before that.

I think it's interesting that we've gone from a practice wonder in Gabbert who folded like a cheap tent in game situations to a guy who is more likely to be mediocre in practices, but when the lights go on, he flips a switch. The wobbly passes that have been a norm during practices somehow disappear in game situations. The guy is putting zip on the passes, and spinning the ball like the best of them. He may not be quite ready yet, but it's going to be difficult for this team to keep him out of the lineup. I think they'll continue to bring him along, but I think the point of being ready is probably sooner rather than later this year.

The balls are catchable. Great touch on the ball. Quarterback play oh how we have missed you in Jacksonville. Welcome back.

Must temper my enthusiasm. Big Grin

This is how I'm feeling. It's difficult not to get excited about what we're seeing out there, but we must remain patient.

Skip Bayless is backtracking like Tony Dungy on Michael Sam being a distraction to a NFL locker room.

Here is the thing. I know that is their approach and don't disagree with it, but they did not expect Bortles to be this far along. Sometimes unexpected things happen and you change plans. Anyways, still another preseason to go (4th doesn't really count) and I do expect Henne to start week one considering it is away at the Eagles. But Bortles looks like he is playing this year at some point.
