"The Plan": Coaching vs Management

Quote:The line came together the final week of the preseason. It's completely revamped since 2012. The one position they tried to upgrade but failed was center. Their starting RT is sidelined with a broken hand.

I'm not sure what you were expecting.

When the entire roster was blown up a year ago, it was expected to take some time to complete the build process. There aren't enough draft picks to do it all at once. So, I'm not sure what you were expecting them to do this year.

They went after Mack and got outbid. They signed a guard from the top line in the league in 2013. They spent a first pick on a LT last year, and another couple of draft picks this year on the line.

Of all the things that take time to gel, offensive lines are usually one of those things that require time to gain continuity. When the center position remains unsettled, it's even more of a challenge.

I expect the guys in charge of running a billion dollar organization to put a quality product out there. So far, it's poor o-line, very streaky qb play. Same as it's been since 2008.

Disagree completely. We got our brains kicked in last year. This year the team showed significant improvement. They just couldn't close it out. That's the sign of a young team that still needs to learn how to win. It'll come.

And im judging caldwell and the coaches right now. Henne was their call in may, nobody made them jump the gun on naming a starter. They gotta live with it. The clock doesnt wait for bortles, it started yesterday.

Quote:Do you understand what a massive undertaking rebuilding THIS team was/is?

Do you understand how comprehensive the deficiencies on this team were at the start?

In order for this to be a complete team now starting from when Caldwell and Bradley got here, they would have had to trade down in each draft, hit on every pick and hit on every free agent acquisition, and even then, the players would virtually have to be instant hits.

Blackmon not being perpetually suspended would have helped.

I know you are tired of the losing.  We all are.

But this team is headed in the right direction.  Give it time.

Thank you. Glad to see some here get it. This isn't about accepting mediocrity. This is about recognizing where this team was at, how far they've come, and what challenges remain. The arrow is still pointing up for this team just like was when they were up 17-0 yesterday. Nothing has changed.

They needed one drive. Theyve been playing football forever. They know how to win. That's just a cliche.

And nobody is going to force them to jump the gun starting a rookie before he's ready. You've gotta live with that. Bortles wasn't winning that game for them yesterday.

When it starts to get ugly, look for my tickets on StubHub because Sundays are better fit for golf than watching a team that doesn't care about winning.
Once again you are going to give up your tickets?  I thought you did that when they made you pay to reprint them since you forgot to take them to the stadium?    Enjoy the Golf course.

Yeah, you're right. It's easy to win in the NFL.

You know what's really cliche?  Fans thinking they can rebuild a roster into a playoff juggernaut easily because they have done it in Madden.

Quote:Publicly Gus and Dave are on the same page regarding "the plan". If we're all having this conversation, I would have to think they have at some point, or at the very least there are a few coaches in the building who disagre with the decision. Nobody agrees on EVERYTHING. I'm not wondering if Caldwell is forcing the issue, and Gus is along for the ride. Because in those press conferences, Gus is really grasping at straws when it comes to Henne praise. There's been a lot of discussion about the plan in general, but havent seen a lot regarding coaching vs management.

You got to be kidding me right?  I got the impression that Dave Caldwell loved Blake Bortles way more than Gus Bradley had in the interviews Ive watched it always seemed to me that Gus was in favor of Chad Henne (mainly based on the QB coach's feedback) than starting his young rookie QB.  I mean Dave brings him the guys, but if hes a great GM he wont tell his HC who to start its not the GMs job and he doesnt want to micromanage Gus.  He hired Gus because he felt he was the best HC available to run this team, and he's going to stand by Gus's decisions to bench Blake & wouldnt say publicly otherwise.

So much panic after one game with a team that everyone KNEW was still rebuilding.

How many of you people who are panicking now expected the Jags to win this game before the kickoff?  How many expected the Jags to  keep it close into the fourth quarter?   I know I didn't.   They started hot and finished poorly.    Receivers need to play better, Henne needs to do a better job, and we can't keep giving up big plays on D.

I knew going into this season it was still a work in progress.  What did the rest of you expect?  Unreal.

Quote:Scoring points is probably more important tbh. Im just saying, the clock is ticking. Idc that blake isnt playing.
Scoring, and stopping the other team from scoring. Look what lead to 17 first half points. Sack fumbles. It's a game of Offense, defense, and special teams. And even in this day and age of offense, defense wins you titles. Seattle is a perfect example. Look at the last 5 winners. Defenses beating great offenses.

Based on the amount of whining by some here, it's clear they expected the team to be a playoff contender no matter what this year.  After all, that's what happens in Madden.

You already made the comparison to college football, remember, and it applies here now. Completely different level of play. Speed, physicality, scheme, etc.

Agreed completely.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

These are usually the same ones to complain about putting Bortles in the start too early.  This is a young team which looked like competitors in the first half of the first game.

The offensive line is already improved over last year.  They gave up 6 sacks last year on opening day.  How many did they give up yesterday in comparison?  3?

The run blocking is a concern, and there are issues to be addressed on the line, but compared to last year, it is better, and that hopefully continues to improve as the season progresses.

Quote:This team wasn't winning today with Henne or Bortles. Once the defense ran out of gas it was over.

An offense that keeps the ball for more than 3 plays sure could've helped the defense regain some air.

Watching the Colts go from Manning to Luck and still win doesn't help a team needing a complete rebuild.  Believe it or not, the Colts need a rebuild.  Trading away draft picks did that team no favors.  You think our offensive line is bad?  Yikes how long have the Colts needed to focus on building their line?

So as painful as it is, I'll just have to keep watching.  It isn't like I can donate money to add to the roster or do something else to speed up the process.  At least the team is making progress.
