The only position group where the Jags might have an advantage would be in the secondary but I even question that now.

Agreed on both fronts.  I'll take our secondary over them probably, but their front 7 is pretty good.

We haven't learned to play Gus ball apparently. Our Linebackers are garbage in coverage. The intermediate stuff is always wide open.

this. I've said before that the reason our defense was getting burned was because they were on the field too much. But we started getting burned right off the bat in the Indy game. Little pressure on Luck and wide open receivers down field and a soft middle. It's almost like we wanted the Colts to rack up a bunch of points quickly.... could this be the defenses way of getting Chad Henne on the bench? (conspiracy theorist rule!).

BTW the reason they crowd the line of scrimmage like that is more about trying to confuse the offense (which doesn't work most of the time), they're still getting into normal coverages post snap.

 

NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, they're bringing a house blitz on EVERY play!!!

What we didn't see on tv was that guys were wide open deep down field and Foles just missed them.   In the second half the Eagles found those wide open guys.  So nothing has changed from day one.

They have a good scheme they also have the players to pull it off. It's a combo of both.


Our scheme is pretty good, not saying it's flawless or amazing but I remember the TD pass to Bradshaw...Telvin Smith got caught looking elsewhere (it appeared his man was Bradshaw) and once he realized Bradshaw was getting the ball he was already late trying to make a play.


Smith is very talented physically and should be able to stick with most RBs in coverage but on the TD he was just undisciplined on that play. It happens.

I agree.  I would rather live hard and die fast than the slow death this defense gets every week.   The 4 man pass rush is not enough and it's not getting home.  Send the house sometimes or send 6.  

 

Tired of seeing other teams get these long drives on us for the score.  Atleast if we were blitzing more we could force some turnovers instead of letting opposing teams kill us slowly.

I'm not saying just the dline,  Blitz safety's, blitz lb's, blitz cb's, etc.   On 3rd and long we give opposing QB all day in the pocket and usually pay for it.

Despite not agreeing with the notion of copying the Jets scheme, I do think Gus and company could choose to blitz a little bit more. They tend to wait until a third and long to do so most of the time. 

 

Obviously - it's a gamble to do so. Cutler/Kromer burned Ryan and the jets on blitzes last night twice for big gains.  (By recognizing the blitz and getting the ball out quickly to a short route)

I really don't think the Dline is the problem.

The issue is consistency. There has been long stretches in the game where the opposing QB has all day in the pocket.


Sacks are good but there needs to be more hurries and pressures generated too to get the QB out of the comfort of his pocket.

Oh - I think it probably has plenty to do with the success that they do have. (When they have it -they aren't having a ton of it so far.) 

 

Those guys are more consistently disruptive than the trio we have in Jax, IMO.  The Jets are also getting more pressure from Babin and Pace than they thought they would as well. 

 

I just don't see the Jags switching to that scheme as a good thing as it would be like starting over when we just did that.

It's like Vic said, do you choose a slow death or a quick one? If I was playing Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck, I would blitz on every play. Why not? If you don't they're just going to take what the coverage gives them and march right down the field. If you're lucky the WR will drop a gimme or run the wrong route so you may force them to punt that way... Kirk Cousins completed 13 straight against us. Luck completed I believe 15 straight against us before finally throwing an incompletion when the receiver inexplicably dropped a catchable ball. We rarely blitz and it's not working. I don't know how any defense can be effective in this day and age of the NFL without blitzing regularly. Not saying cover 0 all out blitz.. but a corner blitz or a blitz up the middle would do wonders.

I assumed they were better.  Yes.  And I still do.  I think that line will finish the year with more sacks, disruption, pressures etc.  

 

3.5 sacks vs 6 as of right now is interesting - for sure - but not indicative of the Jets pass rush vs the Jags.  The Jets will have a better line and those three will be a big part of it.  I hope I'm wrong, but I don't put much weight on those figures after three games.
