For some reason I'm just highly annoyed by posters on the board lately. I don't normally much care as I like coming on here and reading things. However, lately I've had the severe misfortune in watching a lot of posters just post the most brain-dead, idiotic drivel that one should never have wasted life reading. 

 

Yes I get it, it's a message board, you are supposed to post and argue and blah blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally for that. But lets make sure we're actually making sense about what we are arguing about. Yes I also get that we've been a pretty bad team for awhile now and that can lead to making irrational decisions. Kinda like when you get mad and suddenly punch the wall without thinking then suddenly realize that was dumb and irrational to do. 

 

All I'm saying is don't go posting stuff ranting and raving about something when you can't look at the whole thing and weigh the good and the bad. 

 

So here are my observations: 

 

-Gerhart isn't what we thought he would be. It could be him playing through an injury that he got earlier in the year and is toughing it out. I've went back and looked at old film and the guy's just missing a step. He's not hitting the hole with conviction. But he has some good things about him. 

 

-Offensively, we had 7 rookies out there. I count Joeckel a rookie due to his limited playing time. A 1/2 of a rookie if you will. Take him out and you still have majority offense there. What this means is it's going to take time to gel and mesh. it's going to take time to get on the same page, the same groove. 

 

-Coaching Staff/Management: I'm not going to say much here except state the obvious. There's conviction and desire to make this team great. Sure they aren't going to make the best decisions, but they are also learning how to work together as well. 

 

-Rebuilding. It's been going on for a long time right? Not really. What we have gone through on this regime is a total overhaul. Think of buying a house, and then literally stripping the whole entire inside of the house out. The walls, the drywall, the insulation, the wiring, the floors, the pipes, etc. And then you are putting everything brand new back into it. It takes time and sometimes things may not end up being how you wanted it. 

 

-Bortles: He is the real deal. Someone started a post giving crap about how he's a bust already because of his picks so far. I will remind said person that Peyton Manning through for 28 interceptions his rookie year. And maybe it's just me, but I don't think Manning's a bust by far. 

 

-WRs: There is work to be done. Hurns makes me happy and frustrates me. He tried to 1 hand catch an easy pass yesterday and it looked like he could have gotten some good yards out of that play. A-Rob has potential as well as Lee, but they need development. IF IF IF we get Blackmon back one day, then I think we will be good to go. 

 

-Defense: Ahhh yes the defense. It was supposed to be the thing that kept us in the things that have resulted in the exact opposite. We had a tough time here. But what you saw is that the coaches weren't afraid to make the changes needed and you know what? It's starting to work itself out. I think that it was more of a matter of them working together in trusting each to do their job and not trying to do too much. We have a good run D. We have a good pass rush, just needed to work on the pass defense. But that's something that Dave will address in the future. 

 

You should feel special. I don't ever take genuine time to share my thoughts on these things. But I felt like some of you needed to look at it with common sense and stop jumping the gun on things. You only succeed in making yourself look stupid by doing that. I don't want to think of any of my fellow Jaguar fans at idiots who possess an IQ equal to a jar of mayonnaise. 

 

Tl;DR

 

In a nutshell though. I agree. We have some fair weather and flakey fans on here that are ready to abandon ship. It's normal though. You'll see that everywhere around other fanbases. They don't care about the actual youth and inexperience on the roster. They just want wins. Most of these fans live more in the College world where it's not uncommon to see a freshman or sophmore QB or freshamn/sophmore dominated starting team take on other teams that are in the same boat or have some guys that have just a year or two of more experience on them. They forget that at this level, when a rookie comes into the NFL. He's often tasked with understanding and disecting a defense that's being coached and coordinated from a guy that's been in the NFL for nearly 50-60 years as a player and football coach......

If the original poster had said maybe since 1990 or so, then I can agree with it. However, the 70's was a totally different style of football. Some names that were really "game changers" back then in no particular order. Tony Dorsett, Herschel Walker, Franco Harris, Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, O. J. Simpson, Larry Csonka. It used to be that running back was "the" position.


Great quarterbacks from back in the 70's off the top of my head. Roger Staubauch, Fran Tarkenton, Ken Stabler, Terry Bradshaw and Bob Griese.

In most recent history that is true but this ball got started rolling back in the 70's this didn't just occur over the last 10 years. It s just 25 years later the players and preperarion has changed to adapt to it.


Football at all levels was running and stopping the run. When the NFL changes, it takes a while for the kids and colleges to adopt this style of play.


Now these kids have qb mechanics and nutrition down pat by the age of 17. It's a different game and the 70's is when it started. If you look that's when the proliferation of the qb position began to shape up.


Yeah guys like Unitis and Stars were around but they were the pioneers of their day. The league go involved in the 70's to create more Starrs and Otto Grahams.


Now we have that and more than ever.

While quarterback has always been an important position, I can name one to ponder for a bit.

 

Trent Dilfer

 

He not only wins a Super Bowl, but the team got there after winning 7 straight in regular season and going 3-0 in the playoffs after earning a wildcard spot.  After that Super Bowl he signed as a backup.

 

Was Trent Dilfer considered a "great" or even a "good" quarterback for the rest of his career?

Dilfer was the happy beneficiary of an extremely good defense that more or less won those games. It is true that with most (though not all) truisms that there is going to be the 'exception'..... the 'anomaly' that slightly skews statistics. Dilfer is an example; nevertheless, in the modern game and the way rules have been 'tweeked' to favor the offense and particularly the passing game, an 'elite' level quarterback is practically a must have to make it to the 'show'.

This rebuild is the legit rebuild not the mularkey crap or the gene Smith era. Or the jdr era. This is the real deal. Don't let the past experience dictate the current regime. Give it time.

JDR/Tucker won 5 games in 2011 with Blaine F. Gabbert at QB. Blaine Gabbert! Let me repeat that: 5 wins with Blaine Gabbert. Do you really think that the players on that 2011 team were better than the ones this year? Enough better to make up for carrying Blaine Gabbert? If the 2011 players were worse then Bradley is not doing a good job. If the 2011 players were better then Caldwell is not doing a good job (and he chose to dump a lot of those players). The third option is that the players are worse now but will be better. This is possible, but so far they haven't played good enough to win one single game. Sadly, it's just as possible that they will never get good enough to make the team any better than Gene Smith's, and that is a low bar to exceed.


 

We just don't know yet, but the results so far have been disappointing.

I agree with you that there's no direct evidence that it's working, as you say it's too early to tell.  The games are disappointing for sure, but part of the evaluation should be in the assumed potential of so many young players.  There certainly seems to be untapped potential there, mostly on offense.  Gotta remember those guys are so young.  And the failures of the past don't necessarily reflect the course of the future although I say this acknowledging we don't know for sure yet if there is going to be a pay off.

Yeah there are no guarantees but as you said Bortles definitely looks the part. I think the reciever corps will end up being pretty capable too and I'm getting why some people are excited about Storm Johnson.


The OL is not there yet but Bowanko looks like he'll be good in the center position and I like Linder and Joeckle (although it's become trendy to bash him lately). I'm feeling pretty good about the offense. Of course that's meaningless if it falls apart like it did for Gene Smith but I just don't see that happening.
