2 tweets coming from Prisco this morning about Smith:

Telvin Smith is the prototype for LBS going forward. Fast. Fast. Fast. It's a run and cover league now.

The play before his interception for Telvin Smith is the one that really impressed me. Ran across the field to drop Tate for no gain.

I can't recall the last time a Jaguars player achieved that honor.

I'm thinking maybe Rashean Mathis against Pittsburgh circa 2005.

Poz got it last year. Shadrick said Poz got it week 10 last season.

He's not just fast, he's also very instinctive. That's a great combination.

Beside the other mentions, I remember Durant winning it one week.

With 16 AFC teams and 16 games, we should see an average of about 1 per year. I'm sure JJ Watt cuts into those statistics.

Quote:I would love to see him have a go at FS. With his speed and coverage skill he would dominate.
I wouldn't. If he was a terrible linebacker but an outstanding athlete, maybe give him a shot at safety to see if he's salvageable. He's shown himself to be a capable linebacker, though, and you don't move capable players just to see what they can do at another position.

Bingo. One small linebacker, like Smith, won't hurt you too much in run defense, especially when you've got a defensive line like ours. If you start plugging in 225-pounders at MLB and 220-pounders on the outside, other teams will cue in on that and dominate at the second level. Despite what Madden has to say, size and power are still critical elements for linebackers in today's game. Putting Smith in the middle would be a disaster.

This is precisely why we were able to crush the Colts with the run game pretty much every time we played them. Small linebackers all over don't like a power rushing game.

Heck if he (Watt) keeps it up, they will just name the award after him. :woot:

I don't seem to recall Durant winning it, either, but obviously I'm glad he did, too, along with any other Jaguar.

I just think it's too rare our guys win those awards. Hopefully this will be the first of many for Smith.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Really impressive for a rookie to get that honour. Nicely done Telvin!

A 5th round OLB rookie just got DPOTW. Say that out loud and then let it simmer. He's been flashing for weeks and we've noticed. Now he explodes and the world noticed.

If things keep moving forward for these rookies, Caldwell's 2014 draft might be the best Jags draft in its history. Im tired of Shack and coughlin having the best drafts for this franchise.

Durant never won DPOW.

Caldwell just keeps looking smarter and smarter as his picks gain experience and get more snaps. At least 3 players from his first draft look like they'll be long term starters. 2 others will be rotational or great depth at the very least. It's too early to know about the 2014 draft - but it is already looking great with 5 of the 9 players drafted doing good things on the field as rookies. A few of them even look like they may become very dynamic players.

I'm baffled by those that still bad mouth or new GM. Dude is building for the future and it's starting to look like it might be a future with a lot more Ws.

So why is he a linebacker?

Because he's good at it.

Wait, we drafted a guy in the 5th that is playing so well at his position that he won defensive player of the week? Let's change his position!

Seems like a great idea.

I was thinking maybe move Bortles to tight end too.

And Durant is a good football player, just injured a lot.
