Telvin Smith
|
Considering how well he played Sunday and that Poz is lost for the year, what kind of impact do we expect Telvin to have on the second half of this season as an undersized rookie?
He's been one of my favorites players so far coming out of this latest draft so I really hope he can step up. What role is he going to be in this defense going forward? How can we utilize him best? Has that changed now that Poz is out? Can he play MLB? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Way too small to play MLB and possibly too small to play every down. I can see him being used in 2nd and 3rd down packages where passing is prevalent.
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

Quote:How is a guy 6 foot 3 small.218-228 lbs is too small for an MLB/ILB.

I think he could play the middle, but the defense would have to be changed to accomodate a smaller guy. It could work out great, since he's much better in coverage than Poz it may help the TE coverage. In 2000, when injuries forced the Jags to play Mike Logan at LB (although not MLB), the defense actually improved a lot. Hopefully that happens in this case too. I would love to see him have a go at FS. With his speed and coverage skill he would dominate.
Malcolm Smith is only 220 pounds. The new NFL demands faster LBs that can cover.

Really depends on his strength and tackling. If he's getting trucked over then obviously he's not going to be at MLB, but if the guy can be a solid tackler while maintaining his speed and position, he's going to be out there for the majority of plays, especially when you consider how devoid of talent we are at that position.

He could be a kind of FS/MLB hybrid. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Telvin Smith is the new Derrick Brooks.

Now granted, the sample hasn't been very extensive thus far, but he seems to be a very solid tackler. I can't recall anyone just running him over and they it's even less likely he's going to get outrun. Dude plays incredibly fast.

Whoever wins the job, LaRoy Reynolds or JT Thomas, will also have Jeremiah George in the mix as backup.
Smith was nickel LB is going to get his shot at Otto, and may get an "expanded role", but he's not an MLB, nor do they project him there at any time.
