The Helmets

#21

Retired squid here....

I entered the 'canoe club' back at the end of 'nam  ('73) and retired shortly after 9/11. So I've seen seen uniform changes and what 'good' they do. In the end, the navy is identified by that classic 'cracker jack' uniform. Having a clear identity is very important... it tells everyone who you are and what you're about. Changing uniforms needlessly is a waste of money and endangers that 'identity' I just mentioned. The 'new' Jaguars? No one knows what the heck they are... except bad. I identify the new look with a really bad football team. Maybe we should go back to teal and black and try to regain some of that old 'swagger and toughness we 'were' known for.... I suspect the 'new' look is probably very popular in London....

Having said all this, I must also point something out... Of all the issues facing the Jaguars franchise, doesn't the look of the new helmet seem like a rather petty thing to be concerned about? I mean, really; the Jag's have got a heck of a lot bigger fish to worry about frying than the looks of the new helmet....imho.

5 years. Helmets must stay the same for 5 years according to league rules. So - what will it be? 2018 I think?

The funny part of that is when they were introduced there was some nonsense about it supposed to be a Jaguar coming out of the dark to attack it's prey When if that were the case, the gold (the light) would be in the front.

They need to go all black the first 4 games then half and half the next 4 then switch the half and half for the next 4 games, then all gold for the last 4 games.

It makes sense from the back, as in we're chasing the other team while they're scoring TDs lulz

I like the helmet, but admittedly because it's odd and different.

I don't like them much. As mentioned previously if the change was more gradual it would look better, and the colors more glossy too.

They will be changed by the the blood stains of those who line up on the other side of the line as opposed to those who line up beside us!

I like the helmets. I like that we went bold even if it's not the most attractive. It's not a beauty contest.

Why isn't this thread in the Jaguars section when it is obviously about the Jaguars?

The problem with the "jaguar coming out of the darkness" idea is the face masks are still black. So it goes dark, then light, then dark again. What they should have done was put a gold face mask on a black helmet.

There is something I like that nobody ever talks about: replacing the brand name Riddell with the team name JAGUARS.

I like the helmets. I like that we are unique and different from the other teams in the league, even if a lot of people think they're ugly.

At the beginning of the season everything looks golden for us, but by mid-season we are a blackhole of terribleness, so I think the helmets are pretty well representative.

Does anyone ever wonder if the helmets were designed by (or took significant input from) a child Khan relative?  It seems like a case of no one telling the emperor he has no clothes - they're so bad there's no way they should've made it out the door without someone pointing out the obvious.  Beater car matte black awkwardly fading to gloss gold?  They could have done something fantastic in all gold.  Looking at the updated 'Canes (Miami) or Navy helmets is a stark reminder of what was actually possible during our helmet redesign process.

On top of just losing all the time, the grief I get as a Jags fan for the updated uniform is kinda like another nail in the coffin.

I'm not a fan of those helmets either, but it looks like we're stuck with them for a few more years.
