He's a nice guy. He's AT BEST a DECENT rotational football player, one that can be upgraded tremendously by etheir an undrafted rookie or cheaper free agent in the offseason.

1. I'd estimate his market value as $1.5M or less. I certainly could be wrong, but there have been a lot of decent backup DTs who have signed for veteran minimum or close to it these last few years. And before you once again spin the DE claim, any reasonably quick DT could fill the role of run stuffing DE.

2. You don't think that $2.5M could make a difference? There is always some amount that could make a difference. I wonder how much more the Jags would have had to offer Mack before Cleveland gave in? Probably a lot more than $2.5M, but every little bit helps.


 

3. Market price is what you have to pay a free agent. Hood's contract was market price. I personally don't think Hood was worth $4M, but that's the price Caldwell needed to pay to outbid other NFL GMs.

Offering $2.5M more wasn't going to back Cleveland off, because on a single season that's not a large amount to an NFL team. Especially one with loads of cap room.

Now, you claim that Alualu's "market value" is $1.5M, which is based entirely on nothing, but you agree that Hood is overpaid at $4M and that's what a GM would have to pay for market value. He plays a run stuffing 'DE.'  He's a DT who plays on the end of a three DT, one pass rusher scheme. 


 

Estimate is based on contracts what I remember for fair starter and backup DT salaries over the last two years. Looking at Anchorman's numbers for good starting DTs, $1.5M is probably an overestimate.


 

I'm assuming that Caldwell knew what he was doing in his offer to Ziggy Hood. If he gave Ziggy a $4M contract while everyone else was offering (say) $1M, then we have a GM who throws money around like confetti.

I have a feeling that if we were to sign him in the off-season from another squad, people would be talking about how it was a good move.  Sometimes the grass seems greener than it really is.  Bring him back to compete for depth, and if there's a rookie or younger player that can displace him, so be it.

I'm aware where they come from. The thing is, Alualu plays primarily defensive end, though. Specifically the strong side end. He kicks inside in some situations.

 

 

No, I'm not really going to say that he has "exclusively played 5 tech" because he hasn't, nor have I ever said he has. That doesn't mean he's a "defensive tackle". Just like when Darren Sproles lines up at wide receiver in the slot, he's not a wide receiver. He's a running back who will at times line up as a wide receiver, just like Tyson Alualu at times will lineup inside in some packages.

 

You are aware players can shift around in packages right? That doesn't change their primary position now, does it?

Therefor, complaining about his salary in comparison to people like Marks, who primarily play defensive tackle, is comical.

 

I'm sorry being able to see that Alualu is a good depth player in his role bothers you, Joe, and thunderbuns so much. How mad were you guys when he didn't get cut last year like I told you he wouldn't? Did you press the keys on the keyboard hard?

 

tyson was drafted as a DT and the contract was made as a DT. so his pay in this contract is for a DT, regardless if he plays DE this season and is listed as so, he would be the same whether he played DT, was listed as a CB or whatever. so its irrelevant.
