Jack Del Rio emerges as a head-coaching candidate in Oakland

Quote:His success depends on the players. He would win more games in Chicago than Oakland. Wow. Now that's a startling revelation. You have a flair for the obvious. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Del Rio is just a guy when it comes to head coaches. Not bad, certainly not great. Just a guy who will either elevate Oakland to mediocrity before his inevitable firing or flame out miserably after 2 or 3 years and be fired again, never again to see the field as an NFL head coach.
What he will NOT do is lead Oakland to the promised land. That I'm sure of.

Quote:I may be one of the minority here but I think Del rio was a good HC. He just suffered so much from [BAD WORD REMOVED] poor drafting thanks to both Shack and Smith. I mean, It was legendary bad. So bad, I don't think any head coach could have survived it. We could've won a superbowl with Jack Del rio (Couple plays reversed in our favor in that 08 patriots game and we might've. Easily woulda beat Indy and Chicago) JDR did pretty good early on. But the stories out of the stadium his last two years here...well, they certainly weren't that good.
JDR lost the locker room and quit on the team. I hope his future employer takes this into play, unless it is the clots, tinhorns, or tacks.
Quote:He probably would hire Mike Smith to coach his defense. That would really annoy me, especially if he got Koetter too. It woukd basically be the same crew that gave us the best teams in recent memory 05 to 07. I actually would love to have Mike Smith back. Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster The Home Hypnotist! Media on the Brain Link! Quote:Peyton must store oxygen in that forehead of his. No way I'd still be alive after all that choking. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Consider the situation, Gene was more than happy to use Del Rio as a scape goat. I think it has been made very obvious at this point that Del Rio was not the primary problem the last two years Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster The Home Hypnotist! Tom's last few years here were losing seasons where the team had been tuning him out for a while.

It would be really fun to watch those three get together again with a good GM and see what they produce. agreed with Handsomerob86 on the Del rio topic.
Can't wait to see whats next.

Tom's last few years here were losing seasons where the team had been tuning him out for a while. This is actually not true. The last year that TC was here, was arguably his best coaching job in Jax. That team was depleted of talent yet competed till the end. Not the case with JDR late in his tenure. He lost the locker room because his ego got in the way and one by one alienated the leaders of this team (Stroud, Peterson, and was it Grant?). By the end, we were hearing that he was last to get in the stadium, and first one to leave.
I hope Del Rio gets a chance. He gave us a lot of good years here. We were in a tough division and were competitive year in and year out. More than we can say the last 5 years

I hope his future employer takes this into play, unless it is the clots, tinhorns, or tacks.Del Rio did quit on the team, but I think that was the result of all the uncertainty surrounding the franchise at the time. Between relocation talks, and the lack of a succession plan for the Weavers, coupled with all of the organizational penny pinching that was going on (not necessarily just on the field, but on the business side as well), it would be hard to stay motivated, especially for a guy who felt his star was potentially bigger than the market he was in. Jack lost the locker room because he went from being a player's coach to a guy who needed to rule with a heavy hand. Nobody took him seriously, especially when he started calling out guys who were there specifically to be leaders in the locker room. When those guys wound up in Jack's dog house, they didn't escape it, and wound up former Jaguars at the earliest possible opportunity. I'm sure he's learned from his mistakes here, and that if he's able to get another opportunity to run a team, things will be markedly different. I believe he's a good coach who deserves another chance. Oakland would be a good fit for him. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:You could say the same thing about Coughlin. Tom's last few years here were losing seasons where the team had been tuning him out for a while.Coughlin did his best bit of coaching with the Jaguars in his final season when he put a team on the field that had no business being competitive in most of their games, yet they somehow managed to play above their talent level. It sure didn't seem like his team was tuning him out to me. He was responsible for blowing up the salary cap, but he was also the brain trust behind the turnaround. Purging the roster of old, expensive talent was the first step. Weaver caved to fan pressure when he fired Coughlin. Had he kept Tom in place as the head coach and hired a new GM to manage the personnel, I think Tom would have gotten this team back on track and competitive within a year or two. Weaver admitted after selling the team that his biggest mistake as an owner was caving to the fans and firing Coughlin. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:But he was still part of the problem. What's frustrating is that it took him getting fired to make his defensive scheme more creative. Our Jaguars defensive scheme was so bread & butter, it was ridiculous. In Denver, they give a variety of different looks and find different ways to rush the passer.
