Hi All. I've been a Bills fan since the 80's and just dropped by to see if there were any more news surrounding Marrone.

If you have any questions regarding him from a Bills fan perspective, I'll try to answer them.

I think we all suspect that he would be a great candidate for the OC position.

You don't come off as a bitter Bills fan so is that assumption accurate?

Quote:Hmmmm, lots of experience coaching the Offensive Line. Extensive experience in the NFL. Has called plays before, over several seasons in fact...

Seems almost too good to be true. Anybody have first hand knowledge of him? Any Buffalo or Syracuse fans here?
Honestly, the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for" fits Marrone. The Bills' O-line actually regressed under him as the our entire offense in general. Our 9-7 record was due more to our defense than anything Marrone or Hackett did on the offensive side of the ball.

On some level, some Bills' fans might feel jilted of him leaving, but I (and probably most Bills fans) are glad he left and we upgraded with Rex Ryan.

No, I'm kind of glad he left and we got Rex Ryan instead. It's kind of like a problem that sorted himself out. Now if it was my $4 million he was taking, I'd probably feel differently.

As far as his qualifications as an OC, I think they are highly overrated. The Bills were near the bottom of the league in total offense and abysmal at times. I found his playcalling to be very conservative and at times just questionable.

True and there is no denying they were PART of the problem... as was Marrone and our OC Nate Hackett and their play-calling. Now personally, I don't think EJ will ever become a franchise QB, but that's a different story.

When Marrone quit and we were searching for a new HC, our GM (Doug Whaley) reportedly said EJ's lack of progress was because the previous coaching staff didn't properly develop him.

Here's a video that has a little about the Marrone situation from Tim Graham (Buffalo News reporter who usually has great information regarding the Bills)

Matter of opinion about EJ. I thought when he came out of FSU that he would never be a great QB because he didn't have it between the ears. The past 2 seasons have confirmed that to me.. Physically he has everything you could want. But the mental part of the game is every bit as important and IMO that's a hill he can't climb. You guys are a QB away from winning the AFCE, and I don't think that QB is on the roster right now. But hey, who knows..

I agree we don't have a good QB on our roster and that probably won't change for 2015. I'd like to think we'd win the AFCE with one, but the Patriots are tough to beat. I think we are getting closer though.

I'm not a big fan of EJ's either and thought our front office was crazy to draft him in the first round. When it comes to the draft, our front office isn't exactly top notch. We do a good job of drafting RBs, LBs, DBs, and little else. The last good QB we drafted was Jim Kelly.

Ironically,if the reports of Marrone storming out when they traded up for Sammy Watkins are true, then I actually agree with Marrone vs. the front office on that.

I can't stand when people say stuff like this.  EJ Manuel is a pretty smart dude, he just isn't that good of a QB yet....jury is still out on him.  A lot of smart QB's with physical talent to match don't play well at the position.

The team needs a great OL coach whether as the OC or just hiring a great OLine coach to replace the existing one.

Wouldn't be so sure. He runs a type of offense that Peyton Manning is completely incompatible with. If the Broncos are serious about wanting Manning back for one more year, I doubt Kubiak ends up being the guy. If they want him to ride off quietly into the sunset, then yeah, signing a coach whose offense is a better fit for Timmy Teblow than Peyton Manning is a good way to encourage that.

If Kubiak is their top candidate, I think you can read between the lines that they may be preparing for the post-Peyton era.

Whoever the Jags hire, I just hope the guy can mentor Bortles and work out any fundamental issues he has.  Play calling's overrated in the NFL.  It's about talent and execution, not drawing up fancy plays.  Putting your players in a position to succeed and playing to their strengths is important however.  I just think that helping Blake develop is the most important factor, not the Xs and Os and the ability to draw them up.

Agreed, which is why I think the focus needs to be on a guy who has a track record  of being able to develop a young offense.  Establishing some level of discipline and attention to detail matters more than the play calling.  Execution failures this year regularly undermined this offense.  Not the plays they were calling.
