Bears hire John Fox as their new HC
|
Quote:Good point. You can think what you want to about him as a head coach, but he did lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance before getting the Denver HC job and then lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl while there. Head coaches who lead 1, much less 2 different teams to the Super Bowl, don't stay unemployed long if they don't want to. There just aren't many of them out there. I mean, I still hear people/posters wanting ex-head coaches like Dungy, Gruden and Cower to come back and coach their teams and they haven't coached in years. Plus, he must be a great interview.
I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

What arguably is even better news for Lions and Jaguars fans is if Ken Whisenhunt yet again blocks a position coach from becoming a Coordinator of another team. For the Lions, it reinforces the good fortune that Whisenhunt elected to become the Tennessee HC instead of likely having the opportunity to be the Detroit HC. For the Jaguars, as long as Whisenhunt is the Tennessee HC, the chances of them being able to attract high quality position coaches is considerably less than would be the case for most teams. Quote:That sucks for Bears fans. Yet, a case can be made that Mike Murlarkey is better suited to be an Offensive Coordinator than as a Head Coach. Of course another case can be made that he's better suited to be a position coach. It will be interesting to see if Murlakey even gets the opportunity in Chicago. From my perspective as someone that doesn't want the Bears to succeed, the most important thing is for Jay Cutler to remain their starting QB for his entire contract. I'm not counting on this. Quote:Anyone here remember the Steelers' offense when Mularkey was running it? Another case of "great coordinator, terrible head coach." Mike Murlarkey's work in Pittsburgh certainly was the primary reason he had the opportunity to become Buffalo HC. I recall him being an innovative OC. Many gadget plays. While he might not have been a great coordinator, I think most people at least view his work in Pittsburgh in that role as good. I believe I saw an article yesterday that mentioned that John Fox is only 1 of 6 coaches that led 2 different teams to at least one Super Bowl. I'm wondering if John Fox is this generation's version of Dan Reeves. A good to very good HC that can't get his teams over the hump. This evening, I saw another article that mentioned that both the Panthers and Broncos were near the bottom of the NFL in Total Defense the season before he became HC. In Fox's first season as HC, he turned those Defenses into top 2 or 3 units, in terms of least amount of yards. Of course it helps when you have the 2nd pick of the Draft and select Julius Peppers and Von Miller. One thing I'm certain about though. The Bears need MANY personnel upgrades on the Defensive side of the ball to even be close to a top 5 unit. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he go directly from OL coach to head coach in Minnesota without ever having been a coordinator? He's still never been a coordinator, unless I'm mistaken, so there's a big unknown there in how he'd perform, especially given that his track record as a head coach was, um, less than stellar. I believe you are thinking of another coach. Mike Murlarkey played most of his NFL career with Minnesota. But he was never on the Vikings coaching staff. He has OC experience with Pittsburgh, Miami, and Atlanta. Quote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he go directly from OL coach to head coach in Minnesota without ever having been a coordinator? Mike Mularkey? He was never coach of Minnesota that I'm aware of and was OC for Miami, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. After digging deeper his first coaching job was at Concordia, in Minnesota and that was as the OL/DL coach. He moved on to the the Steelers TE coach and eventually OC. |
