Here's something somewhat similar to the trips formation.  The "tight bunch."  Houston attempted this against Seattle - so you'll recognize the defense. 

 



This play seems to have the potential to leave a Julius Thomas type in single coverage with a FS or nickel (s). 

 

  If it doesn't accomplish that it likely  leaves a favorable matchup elsewhere. 

 

 

I've always felt that I want the inside guy in the Triple formation to be the "speed" receiver in my Offense. Get him back off of the line, run some interference for him, and let him jet downfield and scare the bejeezus out of the Defensive Coordinator. Especially if the guy assigned to him is going to be a LB or a Safety.

Makes sense. In that case - our boy Thomas would be potentially in single coverage with a SS which is likely even better.  All depends on whether opponents scheme for J.T. specifically.

I figure that trying to show a specific Defense would kind of limit the play so I left it out. But in an effort to be specific, I'll draw up a 4-3 Under that's been around for quite a while.

For the Defense drawn up, I like the idea of a combo block by the Left Tackle up to the Will LB (W). Now, this is an obvious 'tell' since the Defense will know that it's a run almost immediately, but there are times when it's okay to be deliberate on the football field.


The Weakside End (J) can be kicked out by either a pulling Right Guard or the '4' player.


Since the Weakside Corner is in Press, he is an easy block for '5'.


'T' is taken by the Left Guard with an assist by LT as stated above. Center has N, RT has 'E'.


Either '4' or the Right Guard - whomever did not pull - takes 'M'.


'6' releases inside of 'S', cuts off '$'s pursuit angle, and heads for 'F'.


'3' can go in motion to get within striking distance of his corner.

Gotcha!! I can see a counter working perfect too with 4 pulling to the left. I like it !! Or even a play-action screen with 4 to the left.

With this one, you can go strong side stretch or run action off that and have the Qb bootleg right where Marqise runs a drag route to the right, Marcedes runs a deep post, Toby fakes the block left and counter steps to run a flat route to the right. Julius has multiple options depending who is defending him and where they are positioned. He can do a fly route,a deep out,a deep comeback, an in and out route, etc.

Toby's the release valve if Blake is trouble.

Assuming they stay base (let's say 4-3) to play the run, I feel like our mismatch would be Julius vs. LB and Denard vs. LB. Maybe ARob running a slant or post, Julius running a wheel, Denard maybe a flare.

 

On the other side, you can do some kind of high-low action with Lee (fly) and Lewis (out or corner maybe?)

Yeah that's along the lines of what I was thinking for a trips/bunch formation. I love the match-up of Julius running that corner. And while Lewis has his issues, I think he has shown to be able to make plays running those deep/skinny post type routes. By the way, this formation (whether we line-up shotgun or not) is more of a pass-oriented formation than the previous one I talked about. They go nickel?

 

We run to the left which is, as you guys pointed out a perfect setup for a crack block. Keep in mind that Dallas used Parnell to pull (i think this was shown on that BCC breakdown of him). With ARob, Lewis, and JT (vs. a safety or a nickel) and a pulling Parnell...that entire left side should open up a lane even I could run through it.

I really like the roll out pass to the right with the crossing routes. I think it creates a ton of problems for the Defense.

Interesting tidbit: see your TE who is flexed off of the line? Not sure if you know this or not, but that was commonly referred to as a "Wingback". When that position was created way back in the 30's, that was the single greatest step change in yardage in football history. Moving a player there just destroyed Defenses for a long time.
