Quote:What I have noticed over the years is that the first thing that goes in a boxer is head movement.  This is especially important in an offensive fighter who moves forward.   They get older, they lose the ability to reflexively move their head out of the way of a punch, and they seem to lose the continuous head movement required to keep an opponent confused.   When a fighter tries to get inside, he has to keep his head moving at all times or he's just going to walk right into punches.  A defensive fighter who generally is moving backwards or side to side isn't as reliant on head movement to avoid being hit.

I've also noticed over the years that boxing fans tend to greatly overrate offensive fighters and greatly underrate defensive fighters.

What I have just said may seem obvious to all you boxing aficionados, but I'm just explaining why I am picking Mayweather to win.   Both these guys are getting older, but I think age affects a fighter with Pacquiao's style more than it would affect a fighter with Mayweather's style.   I don't know what would have happened if these guys had fought a few years ago, but right now, I think Mayweather will pick him apart and win easily.

Like I said...

After reading the reviews, glad I opted not to watch the fight.

Quote:So much nonsense in this thread. Of course Floyd ducked and dodged. It's a fight and the objective is TO NOT GET HIT. This isn't pro wrestling where you get the desired outcome you want and the good guy wins. Pacquaio was swinging at air all night and wore himself out. Floyd was coasting from round seven on, landing twice many overall punches and twice as many power punches. Hate on.
They don't hear you tho.

For the folks who enjoyed the fight last night....They'd really be drooling over even just a mediocre UFC fight.

The fight played out exactly how I thought it would. Only people who don't watch boxing very often thought it would be an exciting fight. Mayweather love him or hate him is the best at not getting hit and doing enough to win. I can't stand the guy and think he's boring but will always give him his respect for being the best at his style of fighting.

Now that that fights over, if you want to see an exciting fight I think the Canelo v. Kirkland fight on HBO this weekend will be an all offense type fight.

You are right, but it does a disservice to boxing as a whole. This did nothing but knock it down a few more pegs.

I would struggle to put Mayweather in the top 25 pound for pound all time, and even top 10 at his weight class all time.

From the sounds of it and everything I've seen/read, I didn't really miss much. Have to give Floyd credit though. Like some have said, he isn't the most exciting, but he knows what needs to be done to win a fight.

Mayweather is not an all time top 10 fighter.

That is probably true, but not saying a whole lot really.

Found this....I would swip Tyson and Mayweather and feel pretty confident. Mayweather at 49, Tyson at 48 (But I think that me be just a tad bit low for Tyson still).http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/...reatest110

That list is 10 fights old. Floyd has moved up into the top 20 by now.

Why, because he has picked and chosen who he fights? Based on accomplishments since then, I'd say he probably moved up, but not sure how much. He hasn't exactly gone through a murderer's row.

Gatti. De la Hoya. Marquez. Cotto. Ortiz. Alvarez.

Yeah... Floyd just fights scrubs.

The fight was a dud because Manny wasnt being Manny. He is usually way more offensive than what he showed this weekend. Floyd was the same fighter he has always been. He isnt one of the most entertaining boxers ever, but without question he is top 10 boxer of all time.

Hope his last fight he whops Amir Khan to shut all the haters up.

And btw I think Floyd is a completely horrible person, but to deny his boxing greatness is just foolishness.

De la Hoya as fight 38. Not one of the last 10. Even then De la Hoya was a shell of his former self at 34 and making his last few money grab fights. Same goes for Marquez, he was 36 at the time.

There's nothing special about those guys you listed. None of them themselves are in the all timer talk. He hasn't fought the level of fighters from guys before him.

Mayweather and Khan. The hype will be  bigger then the fight.

Here's a good list.

http://sporteology.com/top-10-greatest-boxers-time/

Doesn't include Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, etc etc....its not a perfect list, but even in the weightclasses Mayweather has fought in, he's probably not top 10.

You think Mayweather cares about anything but himself? He doesn't care if people watch boxing or not. Pacman wanted to give a good fight for the fans but it takes two people to do that.

As a fan I move on to fights that are exciting and inform those who may be interested in the better fights.

LOL .... sounds like the fight resembled the UNC 4-corners offense.

There's a reason other sports simply changed the rules to keep fans interested.

Perhaps that's the reason most Americans cannot name 5 active Boxers.

Manny Pacquiao originally wanted to be an astronaut, but NASA turned him down when they found out he had trouble landing.
