What is the statute of limitation before people finally move on from Gene Smith?

I'm not a Gene Smith fan. I just recognize that he's an actual human being, and there's no reason to kick a guy when he's down.


As FBT mentioned, the Gene Smith era is over. Let's move on and be grateful the team is under new and smarter management.

Difference is Coughlin had hits. Smith didn't. Maybe if Blackmon had turned himself around and became our #1 WR people would be more forgiving of Gene. But he set this team back a long ways. 4 years, and no real impact players to show for it.

Gabbert was the most important pick Smith made IMO . But yeah, with Gene Smith as GM, his hit % in the draft was just abysmal. I actually can't even think of a player he drafted that had success here. Knighton was ok, had and always will have problems with weight and has bounced around the league . Marshall is a pretty good linebacker for Denver. Eugene Monroe is a decent left tackle.

It's not hard to understand why people still despise that piece of trash.. He's been gone 3 years now and we're still feeling the effects of his stupidity.. We had to damn near completely purge this team of his idiocy or we'd never get back on track.. He set this franchise back many years..

I can understand why some are upset about this thread. They only spent 5 years of their lives defending this man's every move as he systematically destroyed the franchise. I remember we were set at receiver with future studs like Jarrett Dillard and Mike Thomas. Our d line was set for a decade with pass rushing terrors Austen Lane and Larry Hart coming around the edge! Tyson Alualu was a home run pick and multiple teams were trying to trade extra 1st rounders for him but we snatched him up. In Gene We Trusted when we were the envy of the league when we signed global superstar Laurent Robinson. Yea, Genius Gene may have passed him up when he was on waivers 5 months earlier, but he is an elite player and if anybody disagrees than they are bibbers! These same bibbers were bibbing up a storm when Gene hired Mike Mularkey, but real football geniuses like FBT knew for a fact that Mularkey and Gene Smith with Gabbert at QB were destined for Super Bowl greatness!

So if anybody is bitter, I would think it is the Genies since their hero was fired. Excuse us for making jokes at the Messiah's expense, but the guy was terrible.

Feel free to go back and point out where anyone, including myself, was thrilled with the Mularkey hire, or that ANYONE on this board said the team was destined for a Super Bowl wiht Gabbert, Mularkey, and Smith.  I'll wait. 

 

It's easy to fabricate stories years later.  The bottom line here is that people like myself did nothing more than preach patience to allow what Smith wanted to do to play itself out.  Nobody was happy with Shack Harris during his tenure, and everyone was on board with ditching him and most supported hiring Gene Smith because he'd come so highly endorsed by none other than Tom Coughlin.  Those of us who were willing to give him a chance were not in love with the guy or many of the moves he made, and when it became clear he was hurting the franchise, most of us were fine with getting rid of the guy. 

 

That's the thing about you bibbers.  You don't understand what the difference is between patience and this full throated endorsement mentality that you seem to think we had.  It's a load of crap to portray it as such, but that doesn't stop you from flinging it just the same. 

 

I know I'm preaching the same thing with Caldwell that I did for Gene Smith.  He says he needs 3-4 years to rebuild the team, and I'm willing to give him that time to do so.  Gene Smith did the exact same thing saying he needed 3-4 years, and by year 3 it was clear he was in over his head.  Nobody lost any sleep when he was eventually fired.  But that's not the narrative you desperately want to concoct, right?

Yet others are still bitter that their hero was fired and also can't let go. This is evidenced by the fact that, after somebody posted a light hearted joke about Jean Smiff's hilarious obsession with Division 3 scrubs, you came rushing on in to defend your hero's honor. It is ok to let go. And if your heart still aches to watch small school players, you can always take a trip to North Central New Hampshire Polytechnic University and scout their college games.

He definitely deserves much of the blame, but at some point it's okay to move on.  This team is so completely different from when he left here.  Any bad ju ju he may have left behind has long since been exorcised.
