Bruce Jenner will be presented with ESPY Authur Ashe Courage award

Quote: Regarding the question you asked,   here's my reply:

If a person believes that what Bruce Jenner did is wrong  ( which is what I believe is the case ),   my take is that Jenner's celebrity status will lead some others down a similar path.   Hence,  Jenner is hurting others.   I wouldn't condone what Jenner did even if he was unknown to practically everyone.   But his celebrity status far increases the potential damage under the perspective that what he did is wrong.

If a person believes what Bruce Jenner did isn't wrong,   then from their perspective he wouldn't be hurting anyone.

If we were talking about something random like trying to bring back bell bottoms, I can understand where you're coming from. Gender reassignment, as I understand it, isn't a fashion statement. The only people who can possibly be lead down a similar path are those who are already of similar heart and mind. I fully acknowledge and wholeheartedly co-sign that our society is too wrapped up in what other folks (read: celebrities) are doing and so forth, but not to the point that relatively normal, well-adjusted men are going to suddenly start taking hormones and prepping for re-assignment.

While well-adjusted men won't follow the lead of Bruce Jenner,   there are men not in the category will could potentially follow Jenner's path.  At least from my line of thinking,  it's something I hope doesn't happen.  But with many applauding Jenner's decision,   I think it has a very realistic chance of happening.

And do you think these people should be treated as 'sub-humans'?

I should hope not.  Acceptance is important, because, as I said -- 40% of homeless youth are LGBT.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

In answer to your question,  absolutely not.

Having said that,  if one believes what they are doing is wrong,  I think it's important to try to speak out instead of remaining silent.

Fair enough. Sorry if I overstepped my bounds.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I see we made excellent progress in this thread today. So we all agree right?

The only thing that I agree on is Bruce Jenner as well as ESPN is looking to make a huge "payday" over all of this, and the award is nothing more than a joke.  To compare the likes of Pat Tillman and Billie Jean King with Michael Sam (last year's recipient) and Bruce Jenner is just wrong.  Neither of the latter has done anything "courageous" other than spilling their personal life to the public.  What exactly has either of the latter accomplished to make them notable in the sports community that transcends sports?  After all, that is what this award is supposed to be about.  As far as I'm concerned, nothing at all except for exposing their personal life publicly and pushing an agenda.

Agreed.  This is what ABC had to pay to get that exclusive interview with Jenner.  Nothing more.

How courageous of Bruce to accept boat loads of money for his story.

How courageous of him to be given awards and accolades from society.

So courageous, that one is.

Sorry, folks. Bruce can't change his chromosomes nor can he get pregnant and have a baby.

All he has done is mutilated a man's body. He can't change the inside. He is still, and will always be a man.

Quote:There is plenty that is positive. The biggest in my opinion is it starts a conversation and one society can no longer hide from.

I'll have that conversation. I think this man is in need of help I find it horribly sad that his mental illness is being celebrated and he will be unable to overcome what has caused him to not only lose his identity as a man but now made permanent physical changes that will further separate his mind from his body.

I don't think nature/ higher power ( whatever you believe in) makes mistakes. I don't think a person is born man with full functioning man parts and was really supposed to have woman parts so he has a women mind. I think something tragic happens or there is a case of abuse perhaps a chemical imbalance that causes these issues and instead of helping these poor people we say just be who you feel you should be and we all accept whatever you want to be. What if an adult decided to revert back to a toddler mentality would we buy him some pampers and say good for you! No he would be offered help to overcome whatever caused the break down.

I know this won't be popular that's fine i sympathize for this man, respect his freedom to as he will but wish he could over come his mental illness. Feel free to go back to congratulating him because we're all to afraid to call a spade when we see it that would be judgmental and make us all bigots.

For the record cause I know someone will ask that's not the same way I view homosexuals, transgender is a completely different topic.

I just think people should educate themselves more on the psychology of it before reaching any opinion:<a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/transgender-kids-show-consistent-gender-identity-across-measures.html'>http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/transgender-kids-show-consistent-gender-identity-across-measures.html</a>.

I really hate when people make random comparisons like you did with adults being children. It's just takes away from the actual topic.

I thought we were all in agreement here...what happened? #sarcasmfont

We can all discuss this until we're blue in the face; but the fact of the matter is, everybody is entitled to and everybody has their own opinion(s).

P.S. ESPN and the ESPYs should be ashamed of themselves.

Over and out.

She didn't change the inside, she merely let it out.

She also has not "mutilated" her body, unless you call hormone therapy mutilation. Jenner has not undergone gender confirmation surgery. Not yet, at least.
