Could the Jaguars trade Scobee? Ryan O thinks so. (Scobee Traded to steelers)
|
OK, so I haven't run the numbers, but I have had time to think this trade through.
The thing about Scobee, and it was discussed during last season is that on his longer kicks his trajectory has been closer to the line of scrimmage. To me this means his leg was (sorry to say) failing him. Yes, I know that we had protection issues, but that to me is a cop out. Kickers with a live leg can still get a kick above the hands of the line. Let's also remember that our line issues were really on the edges... The middle was pretty stout. I think we were collectively wishing that the failings of Scobee last year had a scape goat. But I don't think so... His leg has lost some strength, which is to be expected. There's a chance that the live leg of Meyers isn't as accurate. But there was obvious signs that anything beyond 45 yards was gonna be a gut job by Scobee anyways because of his dead leg. Yeah, I said it. Dead leg. To me, alot of his 42+ yard kicks looked dead last year. Sad to see him go, but glad we had a serviceable kicker to take the kicks. At the ends of the day, kicking is all about strength and muscle memory. If the kid has enough practice he'll be good. And because of his youth, he'll be able to boot above the line on the 45+ yarders. Scobee just doesn't have that in him anymore. Luckily, Scobee is going to the squeelers. He won't be kicking anything beyond 38 yards for that team, at least not when it matters. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:I'm not shocked that such a move was made, but Caldwell could really regret this one. If Myers isn't what they think he is this could cost the team a few games this season, the team hasn't shown it has a lot of margin for winning games with missed field goals so far, and another 5 or 6 win season with missed field goals featuring heavily in some of the losses could push Khan's patience over the edge, especially if Scobee goes on to have a good season in Pittsburgh. That's the gamble he took, however, there's no reason to think Joekel won't be a great OT... errr... I mean that Myers won't be a great Kicker.

A sad day to be a Jaguars fan. I mean it is a young's man game, and Myers showed great potential during PreSeason. It is a smart business move to trade Scobee for a 6th round pick especially knowing that he is up for Free Agency next season, and they certaintly dont want to lose Myers. That being said I will miss watching Scobee play as a Jaguar. He not only made clutch kicks to win games but was very reliable and one of the best kickers in the NFL.
This is a good deal for both teams, and the best chance for Scobee to win a SuperBowl this year is with the Steelers... lets be real with all the injuries and now TE Thomas being out until week 4 the Jaguars arent likely to go to the SB compared to the Steelers chances this year. Farewell Scobee and kick on!

Sure they are bigger favorites than us but highly doubt they get even close to a Super Bowl. Their defense blows and they have a questionable offensive line. They just have good skill position players on offense. They likely finish 3rd in their division.
Quote:This is clearly the worst trade in the history of our franchise. I'm absolutely disgusted with Jags management right now. Cutting the heart and soul of or team right weeks before the season is reminiscent of the movie Major League where management intentionally made bad moves so there team would lose. This is Major League'esque and then some!!! Pittsburgh just landed a winner and a leader and I'm sure Jags management will use this draft pick as they have in the past by drafting a guy who is so durable he is lost for the season on work out number one, or by drafting a drug addict who has been no where to be seen for several years, or by picking a QB who is now the 89th string QB for the 49ers - or at least last year. Jack Del Rio would NEVER have let this happen.I thought my wife is the only one with this train of thoughts...
Many of you might disagree with me, but I believe that this was the right move for the franchise. Scobee's a lot older now, and one has to wonder how much he has left in the tank. Signing a young guy like Myers and making him our starting kicker ensures the long term success of the franchise. There's no doubt that Scobee has been the best kicker we've ever had up to this point, and he's provided some of the most exciting and heartstopping moments in the team's history (59 yard game winning field goal against the Colts anyone?). However, I believe that his best days are well behind him, and we were inevitably going to have to get rid of Scobee sooner or later. We have a young, strong kicker in Myers, so why not make this decision easier and do it now? I greatly respect Scobee as both a man and as a player, and for everything he's done for the Jaguars and the local community, but it's time to move on and embrace Myers.
You've got to hand it to Myers though for winning this job, and giving an experienced kicker such as Scobee a helluva of a fight. Not too many players from small college's like Myers's get to play in the NFL, let alone win the starting job, but he has. He deserves a lot of respect; regardless of how you might feel about the guy and this decision. This team and coaching staff are definitely going to be tested this season with all these adversities and setbacks, but one thing's for sure though; we're definitely going to know by the end of the season just how tough, disciplined, and "good" this team really is. I hear people saying "he's only 33...that's not so old," but what they kind of overlook is that he started kicking here when he was 22. That's a long time for any player in any sport, and he has been showing signs of slowing down over the past two years. Granted the Steelers got themselves a Kicker who should remain a borderline top-10 Kicker for a couple more years, but this franchise simply has to think long-term. His contract is up next year, and the way free agency works he's going to command a contract that makes him the most expensive kicker in the game. I imagine the Steelers paying him something like $5 mil per from here on out.
Myers is 24 and has been working on his craft for a few years now since leaving college. Like Scobee he's a former soccer player who began kicking as a junior in high school (Scobee began kicking as a high school senior). Critics of the move point out that he was like 63 percent in college (Scobee was around 71 percent in college) afraid that he might not be much better, but look up Myers on Youtube and you'll see a darn accurate kicker. At the camp where the Jaguars found him he was kicking FGs from all distances, and in his two most recent camps he nailed 85 percent of them. From all accounts with the Jaguars, he's simply been gold. Myers' one miss this preseason was from a mind-boggling 57 yards, and it was just a hair outside with plenty of leg. I notice that most of his kicks go near the top of the cross-bars, and I see room for even more improvement on accuracy should he follow a similar path to Josh. Early on with the Jaguars, Josh had a somewhat rocky season, but experts talked to him about controlling his depth. He realized that he could taper back on his shorter kicks not having to boot every one. Instead of kicking every kick near the top or over the cross bars, he started kicking them about mid-way up. He was literally nailing the middle of the square that the cross bars make with far more accuracy. Myers may learn this technique as well. What really sold me on Myers was his sheer leg strength. Now Scobee still has one of the strongest legs in the league, but watching the two in camp on kickoffs you could see that Myers were consistently landing a little bit further. At the Kicking camp his kicks were landing about 3 yards deep into the endzone, but this preseason they've been going out of the endzone. This preseason I noticed one kicker (possibly with the Vikings) with an even stronger leg actually kicking FGs on his kickoffs, but Myers is not too far off from doing the same. Scobee holds the Jaguars' record at 59 yards, and the league record of 63 yards has been matched a few times. I can see Myers nailing a FG from 65 yards out. I'm sure there's going to be somewhat of a learning curve for Myers as he adjusts to the league's rushers and antics, and that's really what this year is for. When you look at the schedule this year it's reasonable to think we're getting 6 to 8 wins, and maybe he does cost us a game putting us closer to the 6, but it's not like we're otherwise making the playoffs. Myers' developmental rookie season looks to be one more piece coming together for the Jaguars to have a stellar 2016 season. Instead of bemoaning Scobee's loss, let's embrace our new young strong-legged kicker and root for him. Doing so should make this season even more fun to watch. But remember, he's not Scobee...he's young...so please I beg of you... don't boo him if he misses one.

Quote:OK, so I haven't run the numbers, but I have had time to think this trade through. I do somewhat agree with your take, but I'd be willing to bet money that Scobee hits from longer than 38 to win a game for the squeelers at least once this season. His leg isn't completely dead, he's just lost a bit of power, and he was doing just fine in preseason. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
