Star Wars the Force Awakens, CAUTION: SPOILERS HERE
|
Quote:I watched it and while some parts were great some were disappointing as well. I get that being Stars Wars, you can put blah out and use a few "homages" to please the fans and make a billions dollars in merchandising. And in direct comparison to the other Star Wars movies, it is probably in the upper half. But it is no longer the 1970-80's. It is 2015, and science fiction and fantasy are really in their golden period. Sure, A New Hope didn't have the best script and dialogue, but it was groundbreaking in so many other ways for it era. While I did not expect this movie to re-define what great sci-fi movie is for our generation, I did want a good sci-fi movie, with a good script and a good plot-line. If you change all the names/characters away from Star Wars universe, the whole movie feels like something written, directed, and aired by the Syfy channel. I liked it a lot, a whole lot, but I'll readily acknowledge that the film had flaws. Quote:Sigh. I see I'm alone then in thinking this was just not a good movie. You are probably not completely alone, I have seen a few other say that and in truth it didn't measure up to the original, largely because the story seemed to be a repetition of the original story. But it is entertaining as long as you don't allow yourself to analyze things to much. ![]() People don't seem to like the prequels either. They're flawed true, but at least they stand on their own because they tell a different story. The Force Awakens almost felt more like a reboot than a sequel. Well, that's JJ.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Interesting what some of your expectations must have been. I went in expecting to be disappointed, but left with the opposite feeling.
"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."
Can we stop with the repetition nonsense? If there was any "clone" in the franchise it was ROTJ. Similarities and expansion of existing themes? Yes, this film has that. But there's no standing in calling this a repeat or remake without admitting ROTJ was much more of that than this film.

They had 30 years to write this one, it should've been a better story. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

I thought it was great but my expectations might differ from a lot of you fanboys.

Quote:Sigh. I see I'm alone then in thinking this was just not a good movie. I saw the movie and fell asleep for about 30 mins when they went to the bar and talked to the alien with the glasses, from the rest of the movie that I actually did see, it was mediocre imo. The acting from all the old heads seemed bad The fact that the old heads were there seemingly to stroke the nostalgia of fanboys and not for any genuine storytelling purposes Character development seemed contrived Then again I'm not a big star wars fan to begin with, and probably wouldn't have seen the movie if I wasn't with people. i loved it... i watched episode 4-6 right before going to see it and really feel like it made a difference. There were things i had completely forgotten that i probably would had missed the references to had i not gone back and watched. I honestly like everything about this one. i thought the comedy aspect was perfect; not to much to make it cheezy, but enough to give it a bit of humor. loved BB8. I Thought they drilled it with Kylo. He had the raw emotion someone on the dark side should have, i cant wait to watch him develop into the next Vader. I thought the relation between Fin and Rey was perfect aswell. It took Leia and Solo, 3 episodes to build, but they sort of got most of it out of the way in one with those two and im interested to see where that leads.
Imo, solo had to go. Ford was getting up there in age column and i honestly dont see him having to many more episodes left in him. hell of a performance, but im glad it was his last and they let him go on a high note, at least IMO.
I thought it was really good overall. Better than expected. The following really bothered me however:
You are telling me that Han Solo just happens to be in this random point in the universe, where he just happens along his old ship, which happens to contain a connection to Luke Skywalker...and he then takes them to a random sage who happens to have Luke's lightsaber in storage??? I mean, you can complain about the writing in the original, but that's just egregious. What are the odds of that set of circumstances ("never tell me the odds")? I really hope in the second one Luke explains he used the force to make all that happen. He should just be like, "come on, what are the chances that [what I typed above] wasn't orchestrated?" Quote:They had 30 years to write this one, it should've been a better story. Lawrence Kasdan did have a hand in writing it, who also wrote Empire (the best in the series.) He's about as good as it gets, and is a master at weaving tales of humanity and self-fulfillment. Which, I'm sorry to disappoint, is exactly what the entire series is about. This theme is found throughout all the different stories that make up the greater world of Star Wars. Not sure what you think would have been "better"... I'd say your expectations could never have been met. Maybe because it wasn't faithful enough to the "expanded universe" or any of the other made up stories that were woven outside of Lucas' original trilogy that weren't included? This story was all about broken families, centered around an old pirate, and the desire to restore their family. The original story was about a dull farmboy who accepts the improbable opportunity to rescue a princess as told through her handmaiden droids (which was a lift from Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress.)

The following really bothered me however:Solo didn't "just happen" across his old ship, he was actively looking for it and he knew it was on or near Jakku. And going to Raz is a random choice, she's an old ally and friend who can help them reach the Rebellion. The fact she's friends with Solo also means she's likely to have been friends with Luke, hence why she has his lightsaber. Quote:I thought it was really good overall. Better than expected. The following really bothered me however: Ya there were a ton of those. the most famous ship in the galaxy collecting dust in junk yard that just so happens to be the place all the main characters converge on for reasons other than finding the MF. I still say the best thing they did was make the stormtroopers formidable.

Too many stupid coincidences. Took Solo 30 years to track it down to Jakku where it has been for what 10 years? I liked the film but they took a lot of easy routes to connect the characters.

No, this story was about an orphan on a desert planet finding out that she's a Jedi while being recruited to help the Rebelli-- Resistance save a droid carrying plans for a galaxy saving widget then watching her aging mentor killed inside a death star by a sith with a red lightsaber that they then escape from and blow up. Reboot is a good description of this story, and that's ok. I just expected a new story not an old one with some tweeks. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
