Don't fear losing the #1 pick

Quote:Of course, living purely in the present we all want to win. When we wake up on Dec 30th with a pick in the 2-5 range however, we will be wishing we could trade one of these late wins in for the #1 overall draft pick.

If we lose out, I think we will still be in good shape. A win on Thursday would be devastating to our chances at #1 however.

Quote:I'm scouting Carr against Rutgers right now... my goodness this guy is good.
He struggles periodically with throwing off his back foot and overall the balance/weight transfer while he throws, but the rest of his package is jaw dropping. Fix the footwork (fairly minor fixes in his case too) and you have a star. As I said a few posts up, if we miss out on Teddy then Carr would be the easy pick for me at 2 or whatever ahead of Clowney and Barr even.

Yes, we still control our own destiny. If we lose out we pick #1.

What a slap in the face it would be to the Texans if we took Davids younger brother and he was really good.

I'm at the point where I'm looking for negatives. The only other guy I've had to do that with is Teddy... and I've watched six or seven of the QBs in this class.

I would bet on us losing out over the Texans losing out. They have been competitive all year against good teams. We just played them on their worst game of the season.

I think with the jags first round pick go with Anthony Barr then in the second round go with a QB like Mettenberger or McCarron, I just don't think any QB this year really stands out from the others

I just finished my breakdown of Carr over at blackandteal. Here's the link if you wanna check it out. http://blackandteal.com/2013/12/02/nfl-d...erek-carr/

Quote:The draft is NOT "largely" based on luck. If it was, anyone could be a GM. If the draft is "largely" based on luck then it would be wise to trade away top draft picks for multiple later round picks since luck would favor the team with more picks than teams with fewer picks.

If luck wasn't largely involved, then there would be very few busts.

Also, by your logic, if there is not much luck involved and it is indeed all analytical abililty, that makes the number one pick all the more important because it allows our GM to get the best player in the entire draft.

It seems some have been lulled to sleep by the Jaguars winning against equally bad teams. They have also deluded themselves into thinking that we can pick up a long term franchise QB in a later rounds using outliers such as Russell Wilson And Tom Brady as examples. This upcoming Draft has a Lot of QBs But I think only 1 clearly separates from the others. The rest are either developmental or limited ceiling guys. What do I know though, the QB position is the hardest position to evaluate.

That would be the best of both worlds, but I'm starting to wonder if this team loses a game for the rest of the season.

I was saying it from the beginning of October that the Jags weren't as bad as the "worst of all time" hyperbolic rhetoric and that the 2nd half of the Jags schedule had very winnable games.

I think it would be kind of cool if we won out and went 7-9, but I'd rather have that top 5 pick. The Houston game on Thursday is a big one

If Carr is good enough for the top 15 he's good enough to take in the top 5.

The way we are playing and with a favorable remaining schedule, look for us to be picking in the 5-10 range. I believe Caldwell will go BAP no matter the position. I'm not sold on Mettenberger, the guy has all the tools but I don't see the talent. Reminds me of a less athletic Gabbert. That's just my opinon. I said in another thread that if we go QB in the first I would be happy with Carr. A healthy Luke and an improved Paztor for next year will give us good tackles and we have the picks to bolster the interiinterior line. I'd also love to see us take a shot on Aaronn Murray in the 5th or 6th. Due to injury I think he falls and call me crazy, but the guy has heart and talent in my book. The Auburn game won me over. Keep in mind he willed his team back from the brink with mostly 2nd and 3rd stringers.

I mentioned the Aaron Murray scenario in another thread and would definitely approve of the Jags spending a 3rd day pick on him after selecting a QB in the first round (hopefully Bridgewater)

I fail to understand why McCarron gets so little love as a draft prospect. He's been the leader of the best program in college football for 3 years, won 2 championships, makes great throws, has plenty of poise in big games, and has the demeanor you want in a pressure packed position.

If he's available when we pick we should take him.

1st round. We need a QB with our first pick which will probably be in the top 5 anyway.

There it shows Superbowl winning qbs. And only 33% were drafted #1 over all. That means we have a greater chance of being super bowl bound not having the number one pick.

A 67% chance of winning the super bowl not having the number one pick.

That is why you never tank for that special qb.
Based on what you said, you should realize that the 67% means that it is from pick #2 all the way down to Mr. Irrelevant.

If Caldwell believes in McCarron enough to select him in the first round, then I'd like to see a trade down from the Jags likely top 5 pick and scoop up more picks. I think you could get McCarron in the mid-round or later.

I'd also still use a day 3 pick on Aaron Murray in that scenario.
