Trade back into first round?

#21

I don't think we'd have to give up a lot.

The Vikings traded up to take Brisgwater with a second rounder and a fourth rounder.

Ok, that was for the 32nd spot, but our 2nd and 4th round picks will be higher than theirs were.

I'm thinking to get a guy like Lawson, or Ogbah, we'll have to trade up higher than that.

I remember in 2007, Cleveland had to go up to around 22 to draft Brady Quinn, and they had to give up their 2007 2nd round pick (#36) and their 2008 first round pick to Dallas to do it.

Unless the draft falls perfectly, I don't only think it's possible we trade up, I expect it.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Dave will trade up sometime during the draft; it's his MO.  My guess is he won't trade up from the 2nd pick.  However, I think he'll move up from the 3rd round pick to grab a falling starter grade player.

The more I think about it, the more appetizing it looks for us to trade back and get another 1st round talent. This defense has been pitiful for years, and is in desperate need of some instant playmakers. Dave has talked about his preference for getting 1 playmaker over several "guys". Now is his chance to make it happen. Jack and Spence (and add Fowler) makes this defense something to contend with. I would think there must be some sense of urgency to have that winning season, before someone loses their job. Why not be aggressive and get some immediate top rated talent?

A week before the draft, I could see a trade up into the first round.

I think this would be especially true if the Jaguars somehow end up with Tunsil.  The Jaguars went hard after no fewer than 2 DEs in free agency.  That need didn't go away by not addressing it.

I think if the team goes BAP with Tunsil in the first, they will be more desperate to address the need at DE.

I just don't see the fascination with Noah Spence.

First of all - he's neither athletic enough nor big enough to play DE.  At least IMO.  To me, he's an OLB ala Jarvis Jones.  Trading up for him would be foolish, especially considering his past.

I ask people - what do you really see in Spence?  For a guy 6'2 and 250 lbs, you would expect some athletic freak on the edge - but he is very average athletically (even below average in many ways)...

edit:

I also just don't see him as a 1st round pick.  I think he will drop into the 2nd.  If a guy like Randy Gregory dropped to the 2nd (who was a much better prospect), then Spence should as well.

agree, I think moving up from the 3rd round pick back into the 2nd for a lineman or LB is the most likely

If we draft Bosa and Kelly falls to late first I could see a trade up for him also

That's a tricky proposition.

Center is one of those positions that tend to drop in the draft.  However, it is such an important position, and the Jaguars needs there are so great, I could see that happening and be okay with it.

I could see that as well.

We have 8 picks.  I think realistically 4-5 will make this team.

I honestly see us packaging a few late rounders and going up to grab another starter-level players.

ideally we get our 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, 2 3rd rounders....

the thing I like about Kelly is how much I think he will improve our run game, which is why we didnt resign Wis. The biggest reason for Henry's big holes ip the middle. No slouch in pass pro either, gave up 1 sack I think

Pass rush and secondary have been horrible for us. I feel like the first 2 picks should be dedicated to this, especially if we trade back. Not to say that a Center or O-lineman isn't needed. But defense is now our weakest link.

I could see 2 DEs taken, a C, a DB, and a LB as the preferred positional draft.

I don't see Ryan Kelly making it to our pick. I would trade uo for him if he's lingering in the late 20s as long as the price isn't too high.

Caldwell/Bradley have talked about wanting a center to have to grow with Blake through the years and Kelly is exactly that.

As someone posted earlier having an interior of Cann,Kelly,Linder with Ivory and Yeldon to run with would do so much for our offense. It would make our offense pretty much impossible to defend properly.

How do you stop ARob,Thomas,Hurns,Lee,Greene and with Ivory and Yeldon running the ball.

One of the disappointments of 22 years of Jaguars fandom is that the Jaguars have never had a truly dominant C in the entire time.

I think Michael Cheever would have been that dominant C had he not hurt his back.

Widell offered size, veteran savvy and nastiness.  He would identify the necessary players, but was never a dominant run blocker.  I can think of a few key plays he was pushed into the backfield by an opposing NT.

Wade was kind of like Widell lite.

Meester was probably the best overall, but I'm not sure he would be considered a dominant guy.

How many truly dominant centers are there in the league right now? 5?

Pouncey, Mangold, Hudson, Mack, Kelce?

I might throw Unger in there, too.
