Trade back into first round?

#1

What are your thoughts on trading back into the first round?

I'm wondering if we are at a stage now where two first rounders are more valuable to us than several mid-round depth-players.

So if the right player was there, would you do it? And what's the most you'd want to give up?

I absolutely would especially if we go Jack and the 1st and there is an edge rusher falling. Still would love a Jack/Spence start to the draft.

Absolutely. And Caldwell has moved up to get guys before. Allen Robinson and Brandon Linder. Both great moves.

I remember last year Caldwell stated he would have considered moving back into the back half of the first round if Gurley would've dropped into the twenties and if Gordon had lasted a few more picks.

If there is someone that they value that happens to fall in the draft I have no doubt Dave is willing to trade up to get him.

Gurley.... My god how great would that be.

A trade back is always possible, Dave has said each year he would consider it. For dave i think it targeting a certain player if they drop past a certain pick to make it worth the risk.

It's far more likely that we trade up than trade down based on the decent track record we have now.

Agree, if a player falls a bit to a reasonable trade up position that Dave is high on, Dave will make the move to get his guy.  And with his track record with the good picks he traded up for I think the trend will continue if a player falls that he really likes

I'm all for trading up for a guy they want.

They traded up for Allen Robinson and Brandon Linder. Great moves. Am I missing anyone else we traded up for during Caldwell era?

We have enough talent on the roster that losing a pick to move up and get a difference maker is a real possibility.

We have a healthy amount of pics, so he should be able to target players even if it that means giving up more than usual to move up. This year is different, we don't have holes all over the place. We need dynamic play makers and you get those early, obviously

Caldwell seems to do well in the middle rounds so I would be hesitant to give one or 2 of those up but if a player like Lawson or Spence falls (assuming we take Jack at 5) then I think it's worth it.

I think what you ought to do (notice I said "you" not "I")  is to take a list of top 100 players and use that as an unofficial slotting system, and then do our original picks, and then make the hypothetical trade and do the new picks.   Look at the players we could pick one way, and the players we could pick the other way.  Pick players that are within 5 or 6 slots of our picks, or drop down, to make it somewhat realistic.

Like this:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...-nfl-draft

Original picks:  Myles Jack, Noah Spence, Justin Burris

After Trade: Myles Jack, Shaq Lawson.

So, instead of Noah Spence and Justin Burris, you would rather have just Shaq Lawson.

This is just an example, based on an arbitrary top-100 list.   The point is, you are giving something up to get something.   What is it?

I think I'd prefer the Lawson scenario.

But you're right of course, we would have to give up a middle round pick to move back into the first round.

The questions is whether there are any players in the 20+ range who are worth giving up picks for and whether we can get a player of similar ability by staying where we are in the second.

I guess we just see how things play out on the night, but I'm thinking we are at a stage now when moving back into the first round to grab a better player is better than stockpiling players to fill out the squad.

I don't know, but I imagine the cost of moving back into the first round would be our second round pick and maybe a fourth or fifth, so we'd be taking about giving up a James Sample or Rashad Greene rather than a Brandon Linder or AJ Cann.

Couple of points.

1.  There is still about a month left until the draft and a lot can happen.  But as it stands now, I don't think this team has a lot of ammo to move up back into the bottom of the first round without likely giving up a pick or picks in the future, including a future #1.  Teams have done that sort of thing before, and given the win now or else mandate, it wouldn't be a total shock to see this happening here.  But understand we're talking moving up a minimum of 7 picks.

2.  I could see a move up into the bottom of the 2nd as more likely because the cost is cheaper, and this team has proven under Shack and Caldwell it's willing and able to move up in this round whether they have a ton of later picks or not.

I think if there is a guy the team wants in the mid-late first round, that Caldwell has a strong conviction about, I'd want him to go after him, but I think Jaguars fans should be prepared for the team to give up a future #1 if we are talking Lawson or a similar caliber prospect.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!
