WELP: Norman

Quote:If Dave was determined to sign him, he'd have to go much higher? 5yr 95mill with 65-70 guaranteed? Maybe more to get Norman to come here? He isn't worth that. Dave was smart in monitoring but holding off.

^^exactly.

Jags would've had to pay him more (probably much more) than what he got from Dan Snyder. Even with the cap space Jax had, that's just way too much for him, IMO.

It would've been awesome to get him, but not at that cost. Wow

Quote:We are developing a nice well rounded team. Wise patience played by the brass. Shant mortgage our future, eh?

Once heard someone say sometimes the best moves in free agency are the ones you dont make. I am very good with this.
You do realize we were going to offer Vernon that same contract right?

Which means Dave already knew he could spend that money and be good for the future. He wouldn't be mortgaging the future.

The same Vernon that signed with the giants for significantly less guaranteed money, the one that's not playing in jax right now? If we offered Vernon that he'd probably be in Jax right now lol

Quote:How dude, how? Washington just signed Norman to this monster contract and look at their cap space lol. No way they'd take up over 50 mil in cap space.

Actually he reminds me more of my one year old baby girl. She keeps making unreasonable and foolish demands all the time and then having feeble little tantrums when she doesn't get her way. Also, she outputs poop at a prodigious rate. Similar levels of football sense too.

Jags made mistake not getting normon. He could've helped them contend for the playoffs now instead another loseing season is guarnteed. 4-12 while Normon helps Redskins to Super Bowl.

Your point?

You said he signed for significantly less guaranteed money. Which isn't true.

Im glad the Jags didn't offer him that crazy contract

The Jags need to plan for their own success.  They already have core players who will need to be signed to big contracts.  What if the unthinkable happens and Dave drafts MORE good players?  What if Fowler is a great player?  What if Myles Jack is a Pro Bowler?  What if they build a great OL and want to keep it intact?

What a nightmare scenario. What will we complain about then?!

Nah we'll be ok Wolf man. That contract is ridiculous and would've hurt the teams chances at signing other players next offseason. Josh Norman is not better than Darell Revis, and should be paid accordingly. He's now the highest paid CB in the league, and he's just not that good.

Quote:To be fair, he did just hand Malik $90 million and signed a pro bowl safety (our biggest need) to a big money deal. And then there was last year when he signed Julius to a huge contract. Caldwell's problem is not lack of aggression, in fact Caldwell has done a good job as GM. When is the last time the roster has had this much talent?

The main thing holding this team back is the dopey head coach. Time to bring in a coach who actually cares about winning. The next step is to establish a winning culture, and that doesn't happen when your coach subscribes to loser talk like "at least we got better, winning doesn't matter."
Yeah and DT is the safest position to give a contract too.. Its hard to judge a DT on statistics so you can never say whether he was right or wrong with the signing.. You have to just go off the eye test... I do agree with you tho that the coach is the position which needs the biggest improvement.

I think thats where need meets value. I mean we could obviously manage even having signed both Vernon and Norman, so the mortgage comment was a little off base, but still, Im glad we're still in good shape cap wise, and not all lop sided

I mistakenly read the 20 mil bonus for guaranteed, so I was wrong in my phrasing I admit. But my point is, we weren't willing to throw that money at Vernon which is why we didn't match the Giants... so it's fault to use that argument for why we should've thrown that money at norman
