Losses were caused by such things as failed punt coverage because coaches weren't aware of a severely concussed player, failure to practice the little things such as the center executing a shotgun snap, the inability to game plan against teams using backup or rookie qbs, or adjusting the defense to take neutralize the only wr that was hurting our defense by a head coach that is supposed to know how to coach defenses, the list goes on and on.


There are indeed many variables to winning even when the talent is there. Those variables are all neatly placed atop the head coach's desk...

:woot: Yeah, I've blocked that out of my memory apparently.  The undoing was really cleaning up the mess created by Gene Smith, although Harris wasn't exactly winning many fans around these parts when he was making the decisions.  Gene Smith found a way to drive down expectations from there after starting with a lot of hope.  He outwitted himself with his personnel prowess.

 

Today I learned that it takes a full season to dismantle an nfl roster. A team can't begin to rebuild until an entire season is used to dismantle... a rebuild is actually 4 years, but suckers that don't know about the 1 year dismantle are left for us "in the know" to laugh at and mock when they begin to cry in the third year-- because that is only the second year of the rebuild.


Bunch of chumps. Uh oh, I don't think I was supposed to disclose this to you peasants... oops

It didn't take a full season to dismantle anything.  That was completed in one off season.  However, the approach they took to rebuilding the roster, building through the draft, and not leaning heavily on big ticket free agency the first couple of years, prolonged the rebound somewhat, but in the end, it will hopefully bring the most rewards. 

 

It's because the front office didn't focus on finding free agents that would  placate the "WE NEED BIG NAMES" fans around these parts that they have the resources now to go get the guys who can be true difference makers.  They've reduced the number of holes this roster has not by throwing money at them, but by doing everything they can to draft well.  Instead of racing out and signing big ticket QBs or WRs, we've developed our own.  Teams are always going to have a need to go into free agency for talent at times, but if you draft well, the number of overpriced guys you're bringing in drops significantly.  It allows you to build a competitive team that can sustain their success beyond the next season or two, and that's really what this process is/was about from the start. 

 

I think this team was built using a new approach that suits a small market franchise quite well.  It's tough enough to compete with big market teams on the field, but even more difficult to do so if you're trying to go toe-to-toe with them in free agency.  The hope is that you become a team like Pittsburgh that has done a very good job of drafting for several years, and because of that, they don't have to dive into free agency extensively every year.  The guys who they lose to free agency usually have someone coming up behind them who is almost as good as the guys they've lost.  They continue to remain competitive.  That's what we should be hoping for in this market is a team that can afford to let some of their guys walk over time because they've done a good job of building the roster behind them.

This is the year we should start seeing more wins.

Monroe was at best a serviceable tackle, and another player who had no intention of re-signing here because he would have had to take a lesser contract to move to the right side of the line. The only real mistake was Smith, but even there they didn't think he'd be a good fit, so moving on made sense.


He gutted the team that was built by Shack Harris because the general impression was the roster just wasn't very good. Blowing it up was the best way to get past that and move in a different direction. Again, you and other whiners here moaned and complained about THAT roster, yet you act like gutting it was a bad move. Make up your mind on which side of the fence you'll be watering the grounds with your tears.

I think that part of the problem is the "instant gratification" society that we have become as well as the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality taught these days. People are not patient and don't watch the process proceed and show improved results over time.


Note the "we have the personnel now" type of thought. It's expected by some that it should immediately produce a winning team and/or playoff contention. However, there are many variables to the equation, and quite frankly, no team goes from a complete gutting of a roster to the playoffs in just a couple of seasons.


Another factor to keep in mind is not only how other teams in our division make improvements, but also the general improvements over the entire NFL.


If one can't see the obvious improvement over time (the last 3 seasons) then they probably are part of the "instant gratification/everyone gets a trophy" crowd. It looks to me like the Front Office of the organization is building towards the future over a period of time. What that timeline is... well that's not for me or any fan to decide. That's for the one that really has an investment in this team to decide (Mr. Kahn).


Ultimately my guess is the team needs to finish above .500 for Gus Bradley to retain his position. I do think that it will happen, and .500 or better is still an improvement.

Define your definition of instant? Is it 2 years, 3, or 4? For some of us who watch football,we can look across the fence and see teams, like the Chiefs, Colts, hell the Texans turn it around in one year... So the excuse it takes time too rebuild I agree, but not the 4-5 year amount of time.. And im pretty sure Khan has a timeline as well... Lets see if the fourth year is the end of it ...

You don't know those things, and based on what little we do know they are not even good guesses. Knighton had a bad 2012 after his eye injury, and was scrambling for a decent roster spot. He chose Denver because that's the only place that wanted him. Monroe spoke of wanting a new contract here in 2013, even after Joeckel was picked.


 

Almost certainly Caldwell could have retained either one had he wanted to do so.

How has he addressed them? By firing coordinators long after he should have? Go watch the three plays starting at 6:15 left in the 3rd quarter against Houston week 6, and then explain to me why Babich still had a job in week 7, and why Bradley shouldn't have been fired for not seeing what was obvious.

As long as we don't have a major injury we can win. By major injury I mean a player like Bortles. With the defense we have built this offseason and the draft coming up, Bradley has no excuse not to lead this team 8-8 or better. I wouldn't fire him mid season because it doesn't do anyone justice. Let him ride it out this year and if he can't lead the team to 8-8 or better he has to pack up his ice-cream machine and go.

How did the Colts win more games than the Jags? Bears and Bucs? They don't have elite pass rushers and I would take our offense over all of theirs.

So you obviously didn't pay attention to the games. We actually did blitz a ton which caused pretty much every sack or pressure we got and also caused a bunch of huge plays against us like the 90 yard td by mariota. The problem is that our pass rushers literally could never win by themselves and blitzing that often put us in a lot of bad situations.

You can't be serious. The 2015 numbers aren't out there I guess, but in 2013 and 2014, the Jags were dead last in the league in blitz percentage! And I highly doubt that changed much last year. I think it's you that doesn't pay attention to the games.
