Right around when you mentioned this,  I posted similar information.   It wouldn't surprise me if a 90 mph wind gust or greater hit the pier.

This is the first real storm that we've had since they rebuilt it too.

 

 

   Once the greater priorities of restoring normalcy in Jacksonville and surrounding areas is taken care of,   there's probably going to be extensive discussions about how much to invest in a new pier.    Unfortunately,  rebuilding the pier to have a better chance of withstanding a Category 2 or even more pronounced a Category 3 Hurricane hit is going to be very costly.

  This storm brings back memories for me when watching a Jacksonville Bulls game on TV in 1984 when the stadium was flooded.   I found an article about this.  This game was an illustration why I thought Jacksonville was the best USFL supported market.    Sadly since this article was written,  Bulls HC Lindy Infante passed away:

The city's hunger was evident on the night of June 22, 1984, a meaningless season-ending game against the Pittsburgh Maulers that was played under the most miserable weather conditions for any pro football game in Jacksonville history. Fierce lightning and rainstorms left the Gator Bowl in a quagmire, delaying the start of the game for 78 minutes and leaving large puddles all over the field. Both teams had to occupy one sideline because of the flooding.

 

Despite the constant rain, 31,843 spectators came through the turnstiles, which enabled the Bulls to set the USFL attendance record with 420,400 fans in nine home dates. After a pregame with no national anthem and a first half that featured seven fumbles, the Bulls prevailed 26-2 in a contest that ended after midnight with an estimated 15,000 people in the stands.

"I don't think you'll ever see that much water in that stadium ever again," Infante said. "I remember the water flowing in under the doors to the locker room. There was so much water in one of the end zones, my sons were diving into the pool of water. It was truly wild. Some people came just to go through the turnstile and left for home, just so we could lead the league in attendance."

 

I attended that game, and it was a mess. The east sideline was flooded so both team benches were on the west sideline. There was a car giveaway contest and the car was on the east sideline, water up to mid-door. There were fairly deep pools of water underneath the stands.

 

For a football starved crowd, the Bulls were a short-lived Godsend. I didn't know Lindy Infante had died, that's sad.

   That's amongst the worst conditions I recall seeing a professional football game on TV.   Tampa Stadium had similar conditions for at least one Bucs game.

It's one of those terms that I've heard for so long, I don't even know a proper definition of it. "Hunker down" means... well... hunker down.

"Hunker down", Man. "Hunker down".


I still hear it a lot, and even say it a lot. It has a few different definitions, depending on the context that it's being used in.


Similar to "Fagetta bout it" in the Donnie Brasco film, lol.

They are supposed to have 9 lives, one little, or not so little, hurricane isn't going to bother them much, as evident by their just lazily sleeping away on your bed.

 

Although, I guess they could also all be passed out drunk too. any of them tom cats?

   I hope everything turns out extremely well.  

 

   Trees are indeed a major concern when it comes to powerful storms but I'm glad that you are aware of where the trees are.   There are certain parts of homes noticeably more dangerous than others during storms because of trees.
