Oh, we are absolutely in the same boat. We suck. I'll never deny that, but my point is, Houston has been stagnant for a decade. They are now essentially losing Watt and replaced him with Clowney, who is good, but nowhere on the level of Watt. So basically, a #1 pick made them a little worse than what they were.

 

Lets be honest. Rick Smith is a TERRIBLE GM and would have to get extremely lucky to hit on a late round franchise QB, so as long as Smith is the GM and they continue drafting in the bottom half of the draft, they will never be an elite franchise. I mean, who pays a guy 72M without working him out? How is Smith still employed?

 

In closing, the entire division has failed to take advantage of the lull Indy is in and are basically counting on them to continue drafting poorly in order to catch up with them. J.J Watt will likely retire soon because no elite player wants to be a former shell of themselves after multiple surgeries. A guy like that is too prideful and has made too much money.

It's unusual, but I agree with most of your points. I don't have a very high opinion of Rick Smith either, although he's not as bad as Ryan Grigson. I do think the Texans are in a bit of a QB pickle, and I think it'll take something drastic to pull them out of that particular purgatory.

Yea, they went Willie nilly on that one and I think most people thought it was a mistake.


They are going to have to double down though, and by drastic I mean giving up a ton of resources in order to trade up to draft the best young QB they can find in 2017 or 2018.

I am somewhat hoping Savage gives them a false sense of hope these last 2 games so they have a really difficult decision to make this off-season, then the QB they stick with ends up being a complete bust next year so they have to start over.

40% of his sacks this year came last game. Unblocked on the stunt around Cann, and unblocked on the read option keeper that Blake read horribly.

Alright you drew me out.  You realize JJ Watt is only 27, he's also playing out one of the highest defensive contracts in the entire league.  Umm this is the first year he's ever missed a game. Now admit it, Clowney/Watt/Mercilus scares you a little bit...no no no...I understand.  Nobody is excited for Bortles to throw banana balls with 3 pass rushers waiting to swat/sac that slow [BLEEP] delivery on a pass rush, cause you can't figure out who the $#!@ to double/triple team of those three players.

You obviously didnt watch Texans' game this year.   They asked him to moved from OLB to JJ's spot on the Line.  He didnt have the sack production, but he was HELL against the run and pressured the QBs alot.

As for Rick Smith as a GM.  Is he the greatest..?  No.  However......Rick Smith's weakness in the draft has really been the 3rd round of the draft.   However, his first rounds are maybe the best in the league.   Also, he has a knack for finding Undrafted FAs that contribute (Arian Foster, anyone?).

 

9 of the 10 first rounders drafted by Rick Smith.......ARE STILL ON THE TEXANS and are key players.

 

2013 is probably his worst draft.  2014 may turnout to be his Best.

As for Brock, They can free themselves after 2017.  If Savage is the QB, carrying Brock's 16 million is no big deal (Savage makes $600,000 in 2017 then is a RFA and u can pay him after next year).  

 

Both the Coach and GM signed off on Brock.....so it was not just Rick Smith.  The owner wanted a "franchise QB" and Brock was really the only option since they couldn't move up in the draft.   No one knew how good Dak would be....he went the 4th round....ironically, the same exact draft pick as Tom Savage in 2014 (plus...not every team has the Cowboys' Oline.)
