Caldwell isn't going anywhere

Quote:I doubt it. I bet this exact same team with at least a competent head coach wins 6 games.

I would say this exact same team with good coaching would win at least 8 games.

While I don't believe the quote in the blurb in any way guarantees that Caldwell is safe -- I do believe in his ability to right the ship.

Yes, he picked the wrong coach. Yes, he probably picked the wrong QB as well.

But unlike many of you I see this first time GM as someone who is bright enough to learn from his mistakes and isn't doomed to repeat them.

This current roster has given away several winnable games this season. What should have been relatively routine wins became losses due to self-inflicted wounds.  They could easily have seven wins right now with better discipline and a very average quarterback.

I think DC can find the right guys.

I think Dave is probably tired of watching the old film on these guys before they got here and seeing better play than what they've been doing since. I'm sure he and his team put a lot of work and pride into selecting these guys and then seeing them fail over and over again has to grate on the nerves.

Quote:Personally, I think our QB situation won't be too much of an issue next year. I think better coaching will resolve a lot of that.

Poor qb play will always be an issue in the NFL. I didn't see anything from Bortles this season that tells me he is fixable in one offseason, if ever. We basically have Mark Sanchez with worse mechanics. Bortles' body language this season is worrisome and definitely not franchise qb material.

I hope a new veteran qb is brought in for competition purposes. Henne is just a seat filler and that needs to change. Probably will be stuck with Bortles again next year, but hopefully we have a decent enough back up that can step in

I always find it interesting to see differing opinions. I don't consider us as 'stuck' with Bortles.

I think he'll be more like last seasons Bortles next year.

He's drafted/signed multiple failed attempts at filling those positions. Meanwhile, we have a pass rush that hasn't been fixed in 4 years. No running game. Our very high first round picks read Bust, Bust, Bust, No-brainer. He also drafted the most hated offensive player on the roster and the most hated defensive player on the roster. He wants to hire josh friggen mcdaniels. The list goes on.

You ever heard David Caldwell admit a mistake? He is arrogant. As long as he is GM, Bortles is the man. That means we will have a lame duck season next year. And what coach in their right mind wants to come into that?

Unless I'm forgetting someone, I don't remember a qb ever coming back from a season as bad as Bortles this season and having success. This was his third season, and he struggled to even make the most routine NFL throws. Decision making is just as bad now as it was in his rookie season. And now, he has loser body language. I think it is just too much to expect, and I have been a Jaguars fan too long to expect that type of miracle. Bortles is unfixable now, in my opinion. He is who he is: turnover machine that struggles with accuracy and making the routine throws.

I was a huge Bortles believer... until the Oakland game in which we watched Carr look great and Bortles still look like a rookie. That was so depressing. And I can count on one hand how many decent games he had this season.

Quote:You ever heard David Caldwell admit a mistake?  Yes. Several times. He's talked about GMs including himself wishing they had picks back to do over again and he admitted that letting Daryl Smith walk was a poor decision. I'm sure he'll take some ownership of other poor decisions if he is in fact retained.

As long as he is GM, Bortles is the man. This is just a blind assumption. And if it's true - then I don't want DC around anymore. I think he's smart enough to bring in another option at QB for a new HC.

Quote:I am pretty sure Dave is going to be the first GM to make 5 straight top 5 selections. That's all time bad GM work fellas.

I am pretty sure it has much more to do with the all-time bad coaching this team has had for the last 4 years.

It could be argued that it was Khans call, but the GM choose to keep Gus around for 4 years coaching the talent he was drafting, so lets please not act like Caldwell was some innocent bystander here. He is part of the problem.

Quote:Duh. Caldwell is the an responsible for bringing in nearly all of that talent we have now and shedding most of the weaklings from his predecessor. Tyson Alualu is the only Gene Smith pick remaining. Players who did not pan out were cut this year if they weren't already gone or put on injured reserve. Coaches are responsible for depth chart and playing time mistakes, poor game preparation, etc. GM gets players; HC uses them. I always stayed out of "Fire Caldwell!" threads just because everybody would get mad at me for using strong language to express my opinion that Caldwell needs and deserves to stay in Jacksonville.

So, I assume your Asperger's kicked in as you responded with "Duh"

Khan could have gone either way here.  I see reasoning for firing him or retaining him.  I don't hate the decision.  Getting rid of Gus was obviously a must though.

You forgot about the additional 5th year that he offered Gus.   Heck, Shad probably didn't want that extra $3.5 million anyway that Gus will be paid for the 2017 season.

I'm just tired of people putting Dave on this pedestal for drafting "talent" in the top 5 every year. It's like praising a customer service worker for serving you.

I don't recall ever seeing that.  He is routinely bashed for his first round picks.

Outside of Ramsey, he's whiffed in the first round.

It's the good value he's found in the 2nd-5th rounds that have him in a position to be even in consideration for keeping his job.
