What would Davad Garrard do with the current roster?

#41

Win. Garrard (or Brunell) Would have a better record right now, had they played all year. Henne too for that matter. Does Chad Henne return next year? A side thought

Garrard was a good not great quarterback and also a dual threat. People say he couldn't throw deep but he was way more accurate than Bortles, his check down rep came from having the world's worst receiving corps.  With this group, he'd do a lot better and the Jags would probably win the division.

Quote:I'm starting to think it's better to find a serviceable QB in the mid-rounds (like Garrard) then swing for the fences and try and get a 'great' QB with the first pick. First pick QB busts are franchise killers, and you're far more likely to go bust than strike gold. With a first round QB, you've invested so much, you're almost obligated to give them two to three years as a starter. With mid round QB, you've got a little more leeway.

The monetary investment these days is a lot smaller than it was before the latest collective bargaining agreement.  The thing that hamstrings teams these days is not the money invested, it's the draft pick invested and the desire to make really really sure the guy is not a franchise QB.

He'd check it down.

Just kidding. I honestly don't know what he'd do because in fairness to Bortles. Garrard had a pretty dominant running game between Taylor and Jones-Drew for a good two or three year stint. You can't say that right now with this offense.

Quote:8 yard slant.

Hey man those 8 yard slants to Reggie Williams worked.

I would say at least 3 more wins.

Fail miserably. Garrard barely was serviceable with arguably the best running game in the league.

Last Jags QB to win anything worth anything?

Garrard

I'd say he would have us in a better spot.... but lets not forget...

the WRs still gotta catch the damn ball...

and our run game is no where near what he had in his tenure

Considering in 20 years only two QBs in franchise history have won a playoff game, and DG did it with Northcutt, Jones, and Williams at receiver, I think he would've done good things this year.

Garrard had much better blocking and an elite run game than the Jags do now. But the receivers we have now should be better than reggie williams, matt jones, and dennis northcut.

He also had greg jones who was like the best blocker ever.

I think the Jags could have competed for the crummy afcs title had they had better qb play. Garrard has something that resembles accuracy and bortles has something that resembles ducks. Remember Garrard threw like 3 ints during 2007?

Also doesn't help that bonehead gus coaches 0 discipline to the players. I've never seen so many mistakes and blooper highlights than I have with Gus as hc.

lol .... plus he had the benefit of playing with 2 elite 1st round WR draft pics in Planet Reggie and Matt "the freak" Jones

David was an athletic quarterback with only an average skill set. Unfortunately, he was hamstrung with sub-par receivers at the time he was here. Nevertheless, I think he would still be a legitimate upgrade from what we presently have. I think that a quarterback with even average ability would've had us at least close to an 8-8 record this season and legitimate play-off contenders in our weak division.

It is ridiculous that a quarterback who was drafted as the third over-all pick has to work prodigiously with basic skills for his position.

...nice going Dave.

Is this a trick question?  are we talking about 2007 Garrard, or fat with a new contract Garrard?

Quote:The local idiots labeled him as "captain check down" but Garrard was a decent QB.  He never had a #1 receiver and maybe not even a #2.  In 2007, if it weren't for Dennis Northcutt dropping 2 key balls in the endzone it may have been a superbowl team.

How good do you think the current team could be with a QB of Garrard's stature?  Average is much much better than we have now.
This is false, Northcutt dropped one deep pass on the goalline on 3rd down since he heard footsteps and Matt "Coke Zero" Jones dropped another on 3rd and goal as well. Garrard was MAGIC that game, completes a TD throw while being sacked, made plays on 4th down and matched the Patriots score for score due to the aforementioned drops those were FG's not TD's.

Garrard with this roster would own the division it's not even a question.

But on topic,

Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Let's not forget David had his share of turnovers as well.  Not as many and not the pick sixes, but drive killers.

I think it would be the typical Del Rio years.

We'd be hovering near .500 and still unable to take control of our destiny when a wildcard is within reach.

That being said... the extra wins would come from not killing us with the pick sixes.

He looked like he had eaten his bonus before training camp the year that he got his contract.  It was pathetic.
