Thoughts on Mike Smith being our new head coach?

If it is Mike Smith, I would assume they should be announcing the hire pretty quickly. If they have "honed in" I don't see why they would wait much longer.

(One good thing about Smith is that as a long time LB coach for some great players  -- he'll likely be adamant about getting Myles Jack on the damn field. )

Yes, that.  At least he has a playoff record.  If we're going to criticize him for being 1-5 in the playoffs, then we should also praise him for getting into the playoffs 5 times.

In all seriousness.  I think he makes us instantly more competitive, but I don't get the sense that he's a disciplinarian and I have a feeling that his playoff woes would continue here for whatever reason.  But then again, the only person I'm aware of that has a reputation as a disciplinarian in the NFL is Coughlin and maybe Belichick to a lesser extent evidenced by the way he maintains control of information coming out of his locker room.  Does anyone believe that other candidates could be considered disciplinarians and have evidence to back up why they believe that?  It seems like it's taken a back seat somewhat in the modern NFL, though the vast majority of us aren't privy to what goes on in an NFL locker room so it could all just be a perception thing.  And I think this team would benefit greatly by a healthy dose of discipline, something it seemed to greatly lack this past season.

NFL doesn't want stuff off the field to interfere with the playoffs.  By Wednesday you get a lull in the playoff talk to circle back around to coaching vacancies.  Probably be a bunch of interviews for anyone that got bounced from the playoffs late today and tomorrow.

Mark Dominik (former Bucs GM) was the source. I'm not sure that changes anything, but I'm not sure Dimitroff would insert himself into all of that, given his proximity to Caldwell.

IIRC, Smith runs a 4-3, and Wade runs a 3-4. We have the personnel to run a 3-4, and that certainly would get Jack on the field more. Has Smith ever run a 4-3 in any of his stops?

It's very likely that Duffner would be the DC especially if reports are true that Smith has been reaching out to guys about a potential staff. Mike McCoy would be insane as the OC but I highly doubt we could get him. Possible candidates could be Ken Whisenhunt or Dave's buddy Greg Roman.

Definitely think if we hire Mike Smith we have a better shot at getting Wade Phillip as DC if we wanted.

He's gonna get crucified over his playoff record, but this is a solid hire, if true. If he can get a Mike McCoy or Norv Turner as OC, we can find ourselves very competitive with the talent we have on the roster.


It's a safe hire (if true), without the unknowns that come with McDaniels, Patricia, and/or Shanahan.

 

 

I can see McCoy, but I'd rather not have an OC that might quit on the team if things don't go well.
