The Jaguars agree with me Luke Joeckel is not worth the cost of a fifth year option. Also, the fact that we moved him inside and signed Kelvin Beachum for the LT job tells you how much faith coaches lost in his ability to play outside.

 

I have seen both linemen play. I also have to watch 21 other players at the same time on every play.

Beachum was signed based on one good year in Pitt. Even then he was statistically identical to Joeckel. We also needed a LG and Joeckel agreed to the change. The fifth year LT option was not picked up. Guess what, Beachum's option was not picked up either. Shows how much faith they have in Beachums ability. So here we are, back to being nearly identical. We'll see how this plays out. Will be interesting.

Not sure why people blaming Dave, all the decisions are going through Tom. If Dave says he doesn't want him, but Tom does... he stays. Tom clearly didn't want to bring back Beachum at the price.

There's gotta be some plan B cooking. Those are the best I can think of ATM. 

 

It's one of the two above.  I tend to think it's more than likely a new deal.  I don't think this is a Caldwell decision either.  I think this is strictly a Coughlin call, and I think there may be another option on the table that he has another player in mind to fill that role.

This move makes me question Dave.   I have never been about questioning him.   But this by far.  Would be the dumbest move he can make.  Unless a trade is in the works for one.   I do not see him signing for a smaller contract at all.

Since they're not renewing the contract, could we possibly see a complimentary pick if he signs elsewhere even though we had the option? 

 

I would say yes.  Technically, his contract ran out, so he should count towards the comp formula.  I don't think we have enough high profile free agents to get us a comp pick next year, but he should count.

All of the points seem plausible, either standing alone or taken together in some combination. But the most intriguing are the middle two points.

 

When I considered these possibilities, the name that leaped to mind was Cordy Glenn.

 

Marrone coached him in Buffalo, and he knows Marrone's blocking schemes.  He's big enough and physical enough to be the presence in the run game that neither Joeckel nor Beachum were. 

 

He's better in pass protection than either Joeckel or Beachum

 

Glenn would fit in more as a first round caliber LT than any of the guys in this draft, and were he a free agent, he would immediately be the best LT on the market.   He's still young and just signed a 5 year extension last offseason.

 

The Bills have a new head coach, and new head coaches typically want their own guy as a QB, which could mean Tyrod Taylor is gone.  If so, the Bills would likely need to move up to get in position to get their guy.  If they re-sign Taylor or their QB is gone, they could still trade up if they covet Allen.  McDermott came from Carolina, where they just went to a Super Bowl powered by a defense that featured two stud DTs in Lotulelei and Short.  They already have Dareus there, but Kyle Williams is on his last legs.  Pairing up Dareus with Allen would give them a stud front four when you factor in Shaq Lawson.  If there is one thing that has proven to be able to beat the Patriots, it's a strong pass rush.

 

What about the Bills' OL?  Well, McDermott came from a team that went to the Super Bowl with a bad offensive line.  Pittsburgh and Arizona also went recently with bad offensive lines.  Since he is in his first year, maybe he could live with an average OL for a year or so.  Besides, maybe if he is able to keep the Bills first round pick in '18, the LT class will be better.

 

The #10 and Glenn for #4?  Just in 2014, they traded two first round picks to move from #9 overall to #4 for Sammy Watkins.  The same GM, I would think, would be willing to pay a comparable amount to move up one more spot to ensure getting a QB, or maybe to get the kind of pass rush that can give Brady problems.

Very doubtful but would be awesome. I just think coughlin wasn't that impressed by Beachum and thinks he can find a better left tackle off of the left tackle tree. This is just another classic #becausejaguars moment. We are cursed. It's like everyone who walks into the front office drops 30 IQ points.
