Of course they did. In the effort to be the first to break the story, the truth gets left in the dust.

We should really scrap this whole trade. Albert knows we want him and will pay him what he wants. Let him go to free agency and sign with us.

So now we're giving a pick and a 'sweetened' deal to a player who was already more expensive than what we had...in addition to not being better but half a decade older and more injury prone.
Yep, sounds like the Jags to me. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

We may restructure his contract so that it's more cap friendly. We're giving up a late round pick NEXT year and we keep Thomas? I like that.

I think the vast majority of NFL personnel would say that Brandon Albert is a superior player to Kelvin Beachum historically. The Jags obviously are bringing him in because they feel that Beachum isn't the guy. We haven't really been wrong on any linemen after letting them go recently. Pasztor, Wiz, Beachum, Beadles... They may be wrong obviously - but you have to understand that they know more about Beachum than any us - expecially with regards to his knee. His knee never quite got healthy and maybe they just don't see it improving much. I also think a big reason for letting him go is his run blocking struggles - which Branden Albert is historically pretty good at. It's a gamble - but they seem to be comfortable letting Beachum go.

I do think having a guy that can't run block is almost as bad as having a LT that can't pass protect. I would say Beachum has average to above average ability in pass protection on a good day, but run blocking was always atrocious with him (and our offensive line generally).

As Prisco pointed out too, Albert's run blocking has falling off a cliff as well. I think we're just going to be disappointed all around. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I know we all like to think we know what we are talking about but don't you think we should defer to Coughlin and Marrone on whether
Beachum is better than Albert? Besides....we haven't lost Beachum yet. What if we still sign Beachum but to a more team friendly shorter deal and they both start on the left side? I heard Albert say that if he was compensated he would move to LG...why would he say this unless he was approached about the subject? Maybe Beachum stays at LT and Albert plays LG? Or they compete like Beachum and Luke did and the winner takes LT and the "loser" LG?
Apparently Albert is coming for a late 2018 draft pick. No problem with that

I'm not really a fan of this operation as I would have rather kept Beachum but since there's probably something we don't know going on with him Albert is pretty much the only solution as there wouldn't be help on the way on FA and in the draft.
Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a solid year. Quote:I know that has become the cliche thing to say, but running left was our strength last year. Hopefully I'm wrong.I think a lot of our run blocking success is going to be dictated by the moves we make at Guard once free agency begins. Albert's better than Beachum in the run blocking department even after falling off a cliff, so it's fair to expect improvement in the rushing attack if we address the Guard position with one of the quality free agents that will be available. I'm more concerned about Albert's durability than his run blocking at this point. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:Could it be Beachum-Albert-Linder-Cann/pick-Parnell?No, somebody will pay Beachum more than the Jags. I'd go with this as the line: Albert-Zeitler-Linder-Siragusa/Cann- Parnell We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Parnell was by far our worst lineman last season. I would not be cool with him as our starter going into next season.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."
Quote:No, somebody will pay Beachum more than the Jags. I'd go with this as the line: You have to think other teams will be a bit hesitant when the team that has seen him everyday and witnessed his rehab and recovery don't resign him. That is..."if" we don't try to resign him, which we very well might just a shorter deal or with less guaranteed money. I've always looked at these type of deals from the eyes of the team that had the player recently. Everyone in the NFL knows the Jags want and need too improve their O-line...yet at the same time they're willing to let Beachum test the market? That screams something to the rest of the league. IMO we told him to see what the market had to offer and then we'll see if we can pay the same or more. If not.....we let him go. |
