It's not surprising <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000784491/article/mayock-id-be-scared-to-death-to-draft-qb-in-top-10-this-year'>given the lack of excitement</a> about the 2017 QB class that NFL teams are more intrigued by a player who won't be available for at least a year.

"This isn't a big surprise," Jeremiah said. "Personnel executives have spent the last month or so watching a ton of tape. When you're studying draft-eligible defenders against USC, (Darnold) jumps off the screen. He only has one year of college playing experience, but he's clearly captured the attention of NFL evaluators."

Darnold became a star in this year's Rose Bowl, where he led the Trojans to a thrilling 52-49 win over Penn State. The redshirt freshman racked up 453 yards and five touchdowns in that game, going 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter as USC came back from a 14-point deficit.

Here's <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000768807/article/sam-darnold-saquon-barkley-steal-show-in-rose-bowl'>what Jeremiah wrote</a> about him after watching him live in that game: "He has ideal arm strength and athleticism, but the best part about his game is his uncanny poise. He never gets too high or too low during a game and he almost looks bored inside the pocket. When evaluating quarterbacks, poise is the second-most important trait, right behind accuracy. Darnold is one of the most poised signal-callers I've seen in the last few years."




He looks really good but I need to see some consistency over some more games than just one season before I annoint him.


The beauty of the bortles situation, is if he doesn't pan out and plays like 2016 bortles again, we likely will be picking close to the top of the draft so we might have a shot at him if he declares.

 

This is kind of fantasy here.. The Jags won't be bad enough to pick 1 overall if he turns out to be that good

 

I know it's poor logic to use the sad history of USC QB's for reference, so I see him as another Barkley, Booty, Sanchez, Leinart and heck Todd Marinovich to me .. but it's a year away, we'll keep an eye on him.

I remember when I was a little kid and thought every move the Jaguars made was the best thing, like the Jags knew all the secrets of the league. Reading Ask Vic made me feel like I had a step up on all my friends and the Jags were just a cut above the rest.

 

I'm really glad I grew up and think realistically and use my head, even though it's not as palatable as believing Brandon Allen is Tom Brady waiting for his big chance and that Dave Caldwell can evaluate talent

 

For some us, thinking critically is more enjoyable that fawning over every decision the team makes. Maybe the last decade has caused some numbness but this is not complete negativity or hopelessness. I don't let it ruin my day. I'm not happy that I've forcasted much of the failures of this team or that I pick better players than DC

Darnold is very good, but I still think Josh Rosen can be a very good NFL QB too, if he is given some protection. The poor kid is getting pummeled behind UCLA's pathetic O-Line. I also think Baker Mayfield can be solid with another year under his belt and the one QB I did like that could've entered the draft, but chose to stay in school, was Mason Rudolph. If we upgrade the O-Line and get a premier RB, I feel really good about the 2018 QB class, should Bortles struggle again.

I think realistically. I use my head. I criticize the issues with this team on a near daily basis all over this board. 

I am fully aware of Caldwell's shortcomings. I have also targeted draft-eligible players during his tenure only to watch him draft lesser prospects - sometimes in earlier rounds. I get it. 

 

I damn sure don't "fawn over every decision the team makes" either. What I do differently than you miserable folk is recognize reason for hope.  

 

• I see Smith, Ngakoue, Jack and Ramsey as potential perennial pro-bowlers on a young and ascending defense.
  
• I see one of the best receiving corps in the league.
  
• I see a young GM that despite his mistakes seems bent on righting the ship and he now has a pretty respected boss checking his errors.
  
• I see a draft coming up in a few weeks thats deep at three or four positions we could really benefit from bolstering with young talent.
  
• I see a new coach that seems hell-bent on correcting the most glaring on field issue we suffered through under the last guy. 
  

 

I don't ignore the problems. I just also see the bright spots.

I get the thought here but I don't think Allen drops. If he does, then this defense is on it's way to being elite.
