Tight Ends

Quote:KYJaggy, how important is the combine for you?

Caldwell was asked the same question and I'm curious what your answer is.

Dave said game tape is by far the most important and the combine is about 20% of the entire evaluation of the player.

Seems to me you put way too much stock into a 3-cone drill for example. What if the guy just isn't having a good day, or is sick but is still competing, or has a mental lapse a couple of times, etc?

Looks like the way you evaluate players is measurables first and foremost.

Wow.. 20 percent.

I didn't realize the combine was quite so much. In other words, when two players are stacked right next to each other based on the 80 percent of tape, the combine's additional 20 percent is totally going to make the difference.

OJ Howard showing off some agility!

3-cone.. 6.85

20yd Shuttle... 4.16

60yd Shuttle... 11.46

Wow.

Ben is a really good source, but those agility drills seem unbelievable to me. If his 3 cone is really a half a second faster than Cooks...

</div>

It's good to see these results in. Apparently not too many did the drills.

Here are their 3-cone times...

  1. OJ Howard - 6.85

  2. Evan Engram - 6.92 <--would probably have to get him round 2

  3. David Njoku - 6.97

  4. Gerlald Everett - 6.99 <--a solid 3rd round pick

  5. Michael Roberts - 7.05  <--keep in mind Roberts is one of the bigger TEs weighing in at 270 lbs. ...probably goes round 5

  6. Adam Shaheen - 7.09 <--maybe the guy we actually get in round 4

  7. Darrell Daniels - 7.09 <--guy is really a WR tho... not a blocker at all, but projecting round 6 due to speed

  8. Jordan Leggett - 7.12 <--I'm starting to really like his chances of being there in the early 3rd round

  9. Scott Orndoff - 7.37

  10. Hayden Plinke - 7.55

  12. Michael Roberts, Toledo - 6' 4 3/8", 270 lbs, 4.86 40, 30" vert, 9' 2" broad

  13. Darrell Daniels, Washington - 6' 3 1/8", 247 lbs, 4.55 40, 32" vert, 9' 8" broad, 17 reps

  14. Cole Hikutini, Louisville - 6' 4 1/8, 247 lbs, 4.84 40 (est.), 20 reps

  15. Eric Saubert, Drake - 6' 4 5/8", 253 lbs, 4.72 (est), 22" vert, 10' 1" broad. 22 reps

With his incredible 40-time, I've been thinking Engram needs to move ahead of Njoku to the #2 spot. I've had this thought ever since noticing Engram in Daniel Jeremiah's first round mock draft, and it makes sense. It also makes me think there's a real possibility that either Njoku or Engram ends up at the #35 spot, an if so either would be great value at the spot. While not one of the bigger TEs, they're both big enough and can block... no real worries there... but moreover they're both sensational pass catchers... and Engram has legit WR speed.

I was a little surprised by that number too. (20%)

But you have to consider that NFL teams weigh the individual interviews and medical information pretty heavily in the process and we aren't privy to that information outside of tiny bits of info leaked to the press and onto us.

That 20% includes a lot more than measurements and drills.

Thought I'd make note of this here as I was unaware of the signing - but the Jags added a TE via a reserve/futures contract in January.

Gannon Sinclair. Not a burner with a 4.8 forty time but has some legit agility with a 4.22 short shuttle and 7.03  3-cone. (6'7" - 258 lbs)

He was a 2015 UDFA signed by the Cardinals. The knock on him coming out was that he needed to get in the gym and get stronger.

That's a better 3-cone than Shaheen.
