Health Care

Quote:The republican health care solution? No, we gave up on that ages ago. Now Florida Sports God is trying to convince us the reason healthcare costs are so high is our fault for all being weak-willed diabetes-having sinners. Nothing to do with the insurance lobby. Fatty. Diabetes is the most prevelent preventable disease in America, people just need to live right to avoid it in most cases. That's pretty easy to do with good habits, but we don't like that because it's hard, not because it costs too much. Diabetes is a disease of abundance, not scarcity. So we get thousands of unnecessary dollars in medical costs to treat the consequences. That's what has to change if we are really interested in bending the cost curve. It's not totally preventable...Much like cancer you can do things to try to prevent yourself from getting it, but there is no actual way to stop it from happening...There are many articles claiming that you can prevent diabetes, but nothing is 100% effective...Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste will help prevent cavities, but you can still get them...Now you are just trying to be an [BLEEP] so I'm done with this...we need to get back on topic anyway

It doesn't have to be total prevention for it to benefit us as a society through reduced utilization, and since we don't know who prevention will work for, it's best if everyone is required to adhere to a guideline for diet, exercise, BMI and the like. Improving health care is about much more than just who pays how much for what, it's about limiting the number of people who require those resources. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
Quote: The conclusions page is a pretty quick overview on why we are where we are. Poor Dr. Belk, I mean, when a guy pretty much tells you he doesn't have an understanding of what he's doing then he probably shouldn't influence your decisions about the whole system. Just reading through his attempt to educate people about the reimbursement process makes me laugh. Like most physicians he should stick to medicine and leave the business of medicine alone. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Improving health care is about much more than just who pays how much for what, it's about limiting the number of people who require those resources.I was commenting on you saying diabetes is preventable as you were meaning if you eat right and exercise you won't get it which is false...You can eat the most healthy as humanly possible and work out every day and still get this nasty disease...Unhealthy eating is certainly a major factor in getting diabetes but it's not the only factor... You could be a health freak and in tip top shape but if one of your parents has/had diabetes you stand a good chance of getting it too...Or who knows, you could be healthy as can be and come down with a gal bladder problem, or your pancreas just doesn't want to work right and become a diabetic... Keeping glucose levels stable isn't the same as being cured or prevented... You are just trying to be an [BAD WORD REMOVED]... We show less advertisements to registered users. Speaking of reform how about we reform those unrealistic BMI charts?
Amirite? Quote:Speaking of reform how about we reform those unrealistic BMI charts?the BMI charts we had in the Navy umpteen hundred years ago were so far off no one was healthy
Quote:the BMI charts we had in the Navy umpteen hundred years ago were so far off no one was healthy According to those charts I became overweight as a 3 sport Sophmore in high school. Now I'm solidly into the obese category. I don't feel obese. Quote:According to those charts I became overweight as a 3 sport Sophmore in high school. Now I'm solidly into the obese category.all they did back then was measure your neck, belly and hips (I think) then did some kind of math and presto chango you became fat... So because you guys are fat, what exactly does this have to do with getting rid of 0bamacare?
There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. Quote:So because you guys are fat, what exactly does this have to do with getting rid of 0bamacare?He brought up the BMI charts which are supposed to calculate your body fat...He suggested getting rid of them because they are crap and unrealistic...I didn't know this thread was only about getting rid of obamacare as the thread title is simply health care

Keeping glucose levels stable isn't the same as being cured or prevented... You are just trying to be an [BAD WORD REMOVED]...So you don't think diabetes prevention programs work? Because the government sure is spending a lot of money on them. And we're discussing your assertion that eating healthy is too costly, which it still isn't btw, because a lack of healthy diet increases health care costs, which it does, except for diabetes I guess since now you assert that it wouldn't really help that much. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
Quote:So you don't think diabetes prevention programs work?about as well as brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste...brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste to prevent cavities and you still get them...Look all I'm saying is like I said before, just like cancer and such, you can do anything and everything they say to do to prevent it, but there is nothing that 100% eliminates the chance of getting it... To control costs we need to increase prevention so treatment resources go to unpreventable diseases, not the adverse consequences of bad choices. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

Quote:So you don't think diabetes prevention programs work? Because the government sure is spending a lot of money on them.I didnt say TOO costly I said the healthier foods are more expensive....notice I said healthier, not the healthiest, not the most expensive [BLEEP] you can find, I said healthier as in eating more lean meat (more expensive) non gmo foods... Most people grab a hunk of meat without looking at the fat content cook it and throw some potatoes with it and a can of veggies...NOW eating HEALTHIER than that is what I',m talking about...Fresh veggies are healthier than canned, lean meats are healthier, potatoes really arent good for you so maybe throw in a sweet potato Fresh veggies are more expensive than canned but are healthier... Quote:Not saying it would in 100% of cases, but it certainly would in many, just as not smoking would prevent lung cancer in a lot of cases.you cant know for sure that the people who took preventative measures to not get diabetes would have got it had they not taken preventive measures... Quote:you cant know for sure that the people who took preventative measures to not get diabetes would have got it had they not taken preventive measures... Sure we can, we may not at the individual level, but across a population we do know it. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
PS - in long term studies Harvard researchers proved that 9 out of 10 cases of type 2 are preventable.
PSS - at a cost of 250 billion a year. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
