***Official 2017 NFL Draft Thread***

Quote:To be clear, any pick in round 6 is better than no picks in round 6. There will be a few players (like there are every year) that get picked late that contribute and develop into more than their draft spot. Most of the time 6th round picks have trouble making the roster, and even fewer last longer than their rookie contract (if they get that far.)

Quote:I'd want the best available player. Draft picks are never a certainty that they'll hit, which is why it is better to have more. Not that difficult of a concept. But you think the odds of a 6th rounder making the roster and making the roster for a prolonged impact...are greater than Moving up 1 spot in the top of the 2nd round to guarantee you get your guy. If Robinson had gone before our pick would the knowledge that you have that 6th rounder still be worth it? As much as this board likes Lamp...myself included...the front office obviously like Robinson a lot more and wanted to guarantee him.

I think we'd all rather have them trade down in the years they traded up for Derrick Harvey, Blaine Gabbert, Blake Bortles, etc.

I'm hoping we get a guard and a TE with our 5th and 6th. Desmond King would be a great value puck as well and can replace Colvin if we don't resign him

Dorian Johnson makes a lot of sense. More competition for that o line room. Capable of starting immediately at either guard spot

I think we'd all rather have them trade down in the years they traded up for Derrick Harvey, Blaine Gabbert, Blake Bortles, etc. So the odds of a player being a success increase as you get later in the draft? I'd rather have a 50/50 chance than ten 1 out of 10 chances...
Nothing wrong with trading a 6th to move up one spot. Especially in the second round. For all we know they didn't value Lightbulb as much as everyone else does. And even if they did--they clearly liked Robinson better.
More picks isn't always better. Do more with less. You only have so many roster spots anyway. Caldwell's trades have been generally good. In fact his drafts have been pretty well received. (No Alualu or Anger moments. No trading a future 2nd for a 3rd. Myles Jack AND Jalen Ramsey. Allen Robinson AND Marqise Lee.) And sure, a number of them haven't panned out, but it's not like the armchair GM's knew they wouldn't pan out either. They were excited for a reason. We show less advertisements to registered users. Someone posted in another thread about Dorian Johnson having a liver issue. I couldn't find anything on it, does anyone know if this is true. If he's healthy I would include him with Asiata and Siragusa as guys we should take in round 4.

We moved up one spot, giving up basically nothing to do it, and got the guy we wanted who had a first round grade. It doesn't matter how many Tyrone Holmes, Chad Owens, or Lemanzer Williams we add to the roster, none of them are likely to contribute. It's not a quantity game as you're suggesting. It's about quality, and it's rarely there. We just used a lotto ticket as currency in a trade for a first round talent, a lotto ticket guaranteed the guy we wanted instead of our runner up. You build with the pieces you want, not your second choices. We moved up one spot, giving up basically nothing to do it, and got the guy we wanted who had a first round grade.

Trading up using a 6th rounder in the 2nd round is comparitevely a different world then trading up in the first round using valuable selections (2nd and 3rd rounders).
It is frustrating as a jags fan being in rebuild mode every year and not having that monster trade down where we get a bounty of picks. But doing what he did to guarantee our future LT is basically giving up nothing regarding the future.

It is best available vs need draft philosophies. This GM has been mostly a needs guy (trading up to target guys) and his track record is pretty crappy. This is a team without any of their 2013 picks on their roster and I can see the same happening with their 2015 draft class in a year or so.
