Not necessarily racist, just incredibly tone deaf.

However - one very obvious interpretation of his comment is "Don't monkey this up... by voting for the black guy." That's too close for comfort for me to just dismiss the poor choice, but it's completely possible he meant nothing by it.
He used the word "monkey" instead of the F-word. He could have used "mess it up" but that's a really weak replacement for "F-word it up."
Who in their right mind would associate African Americans with monkeys? Only the racist Leftist press. Anyone who claims his choice of phrase is a racial slur is either a liar or an idiot. When your entire party is built in race-bating, you gotta just roll with it.

Do not buy into the whole dog whistle thing. Ultimately, it's just a way for the left to take any benign statement in the most sterile context and turn it into the defect nword.
1.) Trump's polling in the low 30s with African Americans. That's historic in the modern era and could be the foundations of an electoral landslide in 2020 and we saw the beginnings of this in 2016 when he outperformed every ecpectation among blacks and Hispanics. Minority unemployment is at historic lows and black sb ownership is up 400% that's not a typo. Why would they want to monkey that up? 2.) John McCain valiantly accepted this premise and aggressively derided anyone who even mentioned Obama's middle name, let alone criticized him. His reward? He got called George Wallace (Democrat.) Mitt Romney was called racist for adopting a black child!!!! There is no logical solution to a deranged tactic. 3.) We are supposed to believe that using a benign phrase is the dark mantle of racism, but me. Gollum and his ilk have no problem glomming onto the party that seceded to preserve slavery wrote Jim Crow laws practiced segregation and ignored the 13th-15th amendments through a policy of nullification? The rehab job on LBJ alone should let anyone with half an open mind know this is a farce. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Up until Trump supporting him Desantis has been an establishment GOP representative. He voted against the motion to unseat Boehner. He voted to continue the NDAA he voted to extend Patriot Act powers and he voted against Fair Tax propositions. I HATE Desantis and if I was a registered Republican would vote Putnam but oh well the GOP goes back to the swamp one more time.
Desantis has never given an imporession policy or statement that hints at racism. He's an establishment guy but he's not a racist. He has had a history of saying stuff at odd times. When he was running for the house representative he said something about immigration that caused a stir I can't remember what time was but it was stupid catch prahse that didn't make any sense. All that said I'll 100% be voting for him over a socialist. If the Democrats ran a moderate maybe I'd vote against Desantis but they made the choice easy nominating a full blowen socialist that and I quote "wants to bring collectivism to Florida" from his accpetance speach, ha no thanks buddy! Biggest take away I have from all this is Trump's talk of swamp draining is just campaign talk. He wouldn't have back Desantis if he had any intention of drainging a swamp. Anyone that pays attention to local politics could've told him that. Either he didn't care to research or he didn't care that Desantis is establishment. I never heard him refer to the candidate and monkey as synonyms or similes, or descriptors... Telling voters to not monkey up the vote is not the same as calling someone a monkey. Not even close... to feed this idea as even partially sane thought is idiotic to me. Just another case of how everything and anything someone from the right (speaking as someone from the center) says is "racist".

Apparently what you are saying is the word monkey is now off limits to white people. Because it can be immediately linked to racial remarks? Like this is really where we are allowing society to take us? Nope. No. nope nope nope. IDIOTIC. Interesting. Howard Cosell lost his job over it using it in a football broadcast. Though he was MUCH more direct. You can elect to turn a blind eye all you like, but if I'm running against a black man in a political race, I'm not going to imply that a vote for my opponent would "monkey it up." It's just poor judgement given the history of the word's connotation in our society. I'm not demonizing the guy or the word at face value. Is it silly? Yeah, on the surface it is. And, no, of course the word isn't off limits, LOL. But if you're running for public office - you could certainly be smarter about using it than DeSantis was in this instance.
The people describing this as racist in any fashion are the only ones making an association of a monkey to a black person. The accusation itself is racist in nature. The accuser is the one making the association, therefore putting on display their own mindset. Just idiotic is what it is.
Damn team can't be the Redskins, The Frito bandito was obviously a racist commercial against the Mexicans and now cannot use the word monkey without becoming a racist. What do I answer a Chinaman if he asks me what color a banana is? If the server at the counter at KFC happens to be black can I still order some friggin fried chicken? C'MON PEOPLE!! I'm going to demand Saltine change the name of their product. Cracker is racist don't ya know?
