Disproportionate violence by police against black people is the primary cause for the protests.  Disproportionate incarceration rates of minorities is another.  Educational and economic opportunity in our country is not equal.  Racism is alive and well (although not just in the south).  Being critical of your country doesn't mean you don't love it, it means you think the country should strive to be something better.
