Those people have every reason in the world to whine and complain, but you never hear a peep out of them unless we try to run a pipeline through their ancestral homeland. It's land that was promised to them via the Treaty of Fort Laramie and surprise, surprise, was taken back and set aside for private use. Native Americans have always been repressed by this country, but it's everyone else that wants to complain about their own conditions. How ironic.

The whole idea of a reservation is long outdated. There's no reason American Indians shouldn't just blend in with the rest of the citizenry. It's not like they are still preserving some pre-European culture (casinos, cough cough). The logical thing would be to give every person on a reservation an equal fraction of the land and other assets and let them individually do what they want, dissolving the reservation. I suspect the tribal leaders are the ones who benefit from the status quo and are opposed to it.

BTW, the Dakota pipeline was not routed through Indian land. The accusation was that it was routed through an old Indian burial ground on non-reservation land. Since there was already an existing pipeline there, that ship had sailed for everyone but the environmental activists opposed to every pipeline. They were just using American Indians in this case.

The Dakota pipeline is a special kind of clusterfrag all around. Using it as an example of anything is dubious at best, because both sides were right and both sides were very wrong.

I can understand the concept of a reservation and why we still have it. Native Americans are essentially holding on to semi-sovereign powers over what little land they have left. I wouldn't be in favor of disbanding them, as I'm sure many Native Americans wouldn't either, but I do think they could stand to integrate more with the communities around them (if there are any).
