We wouldn't have gotten him for a two. It would have cost us a lot more. By sending Garoppolo to us, Belichick would be shipping a quality player off to an ascending team in position to challenge the Patriots in the postseason for years to come. Belichick's not going to give this team the QB it needs to be a perpetual playoff headache without fleecing us for multiple first-round picks.

By sending him to the 49ers, Belichick gets out of a messy contract situation (and possibly a messy locker room situation, if Brady struggles at some point). He takes less in trade capital than he otherwise would have, but he gets Garoppolo out of the AFC and onto a toilet team that wouldn't be making any playoff runs in the next few years even if they had Joe Montana back at QB. With the 49ers "fighting" for rights to the first pick in the second round, it's actually a pretty brilliant trade and further evidence that Belichick just gets it.
