It's not about working for free. It's about setting the example for the team. As the best player or one of the best on the team, your decisions set the tone for everyone below you. If I was in Ramsey's shoes, I'd show up this year. Maybe see if they'd let his dad come down for some of the time. But if he wants this team to be his, he's gotta show everyone who will be there that the big boys will do it too. We lost a lot of that "team" from last year, this year. Losing will do that sometimes. But his presence there could make a big difference.

More than that, he needs to tell all the magazine editors he's busy prepping for the season before sitting down to trash the majority of his opponents' starting QBs. Talk all the smack you want about the other teams' terrible players in the locker room after practice, but keep it out of print.  Let the game do the talking for you. That so-called swagger is a big reason why everyone thought of themselves first and team second.

Fred worked his butt off during the off-season, and when he did show, he was ready to go, no gradual easing into things, getting into football shape, etc. If that works for Jalen, great. Jalen's job is not to teach the new kids how to study film, work on footwork, eat right, etc. If he is there for every voluntary practice, that's awesome, but I don't think that will contribute to any win, loss, or team identity over the course of the season.
