I hear you.  I just think that your initial posts accurately describes him "learning from a mistake." 
Semantics.  No big deal. 

The backlash you described alerted him that he'd made a mistake by sharing all of those opinions. 
A lesser backlash may not have been enough for him to realize he'd been a bit too honest for his own good. 

And I do believe he was too honest. Primarily because the league is an incetuous family and a player with a long career will end up being teammates or being coached by a large number of players and coaches who they initially meet as opponents.  Publicly bashing a large swath of those people is not a wise move with that in mind.
