I read this as his people have tried to get him to see it he doesn't have the position to get a top deal immediately. He needs to needs to understand the rules of the CBA, he can't just do what he wants. He believes he is worth top money and will not accept anything else, even if he doesn't get paid at all.

It is not a smart decision, sure the rules may not be fair for top talent, but the rules are there and agreed to by the NFLPA.

More so "organization trying to make the situation look less bad" 

And you can do whatever your leverage let's you. In Yannick case, for example, he's getting a huge contract no matter what team he's on but may be able to get to a team of his liking too
