There's some truth to that. You ultimately are what your performance says you are. Yan had an outstanding season in 2017. Since then his performance as a starter has been very good against the pass, fairly average against the run. Elite? They'd have to really redefine the term to include him in that category.

When I look at Yan, I look at more than the numbers. He is just a play maker. When we need a sack or a turn over, he is our guy. People forget he started out injured last year and still had a very solid season. Plus players aren't paid for what they have done, they are paid for what they are projected to do and Yan is definitely ascending.
