I'm no fan of Gene Smith, but he actually had a slightly better winning percentage of 34% than Caldwell at 32% and somehow Caldwell has been given seven years and now a eighth year.  If you blame Coughlin for Caldwell's failures, I would point out that Caldwell's record drops to 23% if you only count the years without Coughlin.  That's an average of less than 4 wins per season.  It's almost incomprehensible that he's still here.  I also think it's extremely likely that he's back next year.  There's no way Caldwell makes the moves he did this offseason if he thought this year was make or break.  He's clearly been told that he'll have another year.
