The problem was when the QB had to hold the ball for deeper plays to develop. That's when the QB got hit too much.

I agree with this line of thinking. Middle of the pack in hits allowed in a Gruden offense is quite bad.

And a huge reason for that was because we had 3 different bums playing QB for us. Upgrading the QB position alone will instantly help that.
