There was a lot of discussion about this while Trump was in office.   (Those who avoid the mainstream media would not know this.)

The big question was, why do we allow one single person to hold the fate of the world in his hands?  I'm sure the answer goes back to the cold war, when we were afraid of a sneak attack with about 30 minutes to make a decision whether to respond to it with a nuclear launch of our own.
