The problem with the old sudden death was that the team that won the toss had a huge advantage.  If you change the rule and have the team that wins the toss pick where the ball will be spotted, and let the team that lost the toss decide whether to go offense or defense, that would even the odds.  You can still have sudden death if you want to make that part of the new rule.  

It would make the result less dependent on luck.  It would also bring strategy into the equation.  Where you spot the ball, whether you pick offense or defense, would depend on the team you are playing, how your own team is playing, and so forth.  For example, if the score is tied 48-48, so you're in a game where neither team can seem to stop the other one, and you win the toss, you might spot the ball at the 10 yard line.  Then the other team has to decide if it thinks it can drive the ball far enough to kick a FG and win the game.  Or, if you are in a 6-6 tie, and you win the toss, you might decide to spot the ball at the 30 yard line.  

In other words, the team winning the toss has to pick the break-even point on the field to spot the ball.  You can still have sudden death if you want, but this method is more fair that the old sudden death that completely favored the team that won the toss.
