This is a Great Idea

Spot and Choose Overtime Rule

Possible new overtime rule:

Toss the coin, the team that wins the coin toss decides where the ball will be placed, and the other team decides whether to take offense or defense.  So for example, team A wins the coin toss, and decides the ball will be spotted on the 15 yard line, with the end zone 85 yards away.  Team B says, we'll take defense, or we'll take offense.  In other words, team B either decides to defend the 85 yards, or they decide they'd like to try to start a drive from their own 15 yard line.  Sudden death.  First team to score wins.

I think it's a great idea.

better idea is just not having overtime in regular season games. When you get to the postseason, no gimmicks, just continue on as a fifth quarter and so on. Why do we always have to overthink things?

No.  When I go to the game and root for a team for 3 hours, I want a decisive winner and loser (although I probably would have been happy with ties over the past 10 years - lol).

My mentality is a little different when it comes to soccer since there is so little scoring and no salary cap (in European leagues) so lower salary teams almost need to play for a tie at times.

As Ted Lasso said ‘a tie is the first sign of the apocalypse in America’ ??

I like the way it works at present, the old way effectively meant you could win a game just by winning a coin flip.

Only other fair way would be to have it as sudden death but the team that led for the most minutes start with the ball.

"We want the ball and we're gonna score!"

I don't like ties.  You do need overtime.

This "spot and choose" is definitely interesting.  Prior to hearing it, I always liked the idea of sudden death, but the team who got the ball first had to score a touchdown while the team that opened on defense would only have to score a field goal to win.  It helps even out the coin toss.  You may get the first try, but it's much tougher to score a touchdown than a field goal.

I couldn't agree more.  The rules already handle ties, and regular season rarely goes to OT anyhow.  On the off chance we frequently see playoff contenders with two ties, you can discourage tie games by doing what soccer has done for years, counting a win is three points and a tie as one.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Overtime isn't actually necessary in my opinion.
If you're in the fourth quarter, and it's tied, and the clock goes down to zero, you can just keep the ball where it is, keep the same down and distance and just run more plays until someone scores.
But I would only do that in the playoffs. Regular season, just let it end in a tie! It takes 3 hours to get to the end of the game already, why take longer?

Bad idea.  That gives a unfair advantage to the team with the ball in the final minutes.  The game clock becomes a non factor and timeouts have reduced significance.
When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

Should just be a 5th qtr.. a team losing a game because they didnt get the ball in OT is stupid.

The problem with the old sudden death was that the team that won the toss had a huge advantage.  If you change the rule and have the team that wins the toss pick where the ball will be spotted, and let the team that lost the toss decide whether to go offense or defense, that would even the odds.  You can still have sudden death if you want to make that part of the new rule.

It would make the result less dependent on luck.  It would also bring strategy into the equation.  Where you spot the ball, whether you pick offense or defense, would depend on the team you are playing, how your own team is playing, and so forth.  For example, if the score is tied 48-48, so you're in a game where neither team can seem to stop the other one, and you win the toss, you might spot the ball at the 10 yard line.  Then the other team has to decide if it thinks it can drive the ball far enough to kick a FG and win the game.  Or, if you are in a 6-6 tie, and you win the toss, you might decide to spot the ball at the 30 yard line.

In other words, the team winning the toss has to pick the break-even point on the field to spot the ball.  You can still have sudden death if you want, but this method is more fair that the old sudden death that completely favored the team that won the toss.

I like OT to keep the same quarter structure. Especially in outdoor stadia, switching which end zone you are driving to can impact FG tries, running in mud, crowd noise, etc.

Yet another reason why domes are the worst.

Did they not get the ball multiple times in the first 60 minutes? If your defense can't make one stop on one drive, do you deserve a win?

Worse - can you imagine losing your franchise QB to injury on the third drive of the 5th quarter, when your team is already down 10? There comes a time when you have to admit that it just wasn't your week, and move on to the next opponent.

I don’t necessarily agree with the first part but the second Part Im with you. Nobody is a good loser but there comes a point where you have to just admit defeat and  move on. When you look at something in hindsight it may make since but in the moment most people would exhaust every avenue given to them even if it would put people at risk.

Absolutely fantastic. Have you watched the initial adverts what spawned the idea? If not I’d recommend it they’re about 3 mins each but so good. NBC I believe?

This would add so much strategy, I'm a big fan conceptually. Would love to see them try it for a preseason.

I agree with this generally.

However, considering how the rules changes have substantially neutered the defenses over the years, it's hard to expect them to stop a team in overtime.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

Bring back Bump n Run defense. Bring back sudden death OT.
