OK, so are you stating the Jets could give Trevor Lawrence $50 million cash gift prior to the draft resulting in Trevor independently stating he will not play for the Jags (pulling a John Elway or Eli Manning trick).  Jets subsequently offer the Jags the #2 pick + 1st round picks in 2022 and 2023 -- the Jags being backed into a corner, accept the deal.   That's legal?  Perhaps the requirement of the NFL having to approve all trades could be justification for the NFL to shut down the shady deal.

I think what he was saying is that the player is able to receive gifts/compensation after the school year is over - since he's no longer a collegiate athlete and isn't governed by NCAA rules.

I also think there a difference between your scenario of a team manipulating the draft process by giving a prospective draftee 50 million dollars, and some fans giving a potential player a wedding gift and donating the leftover $$ to charity. One is from team officials while fans have no official ties to the team - I'm not sure if a team can be penalized for the actions of their fans....You may be right about the team example being covered by the league having to approve trades
